Sometime next month we'll be upgrading the forum software---no, don't panic, everything is going to continue to look like it does now, this is a "software upgrade." Again, nothing but a software upgrade.

Now, the but part.

However, if you'd like to see a few tweaks, please let us know. The tweaks are too long to explain, so I want you to look at these specific pages where we are beta running the software upgrade already. Again, the look and feel, along with colors, style, etc., will not change here, the site we're sending you to has different styles, we will not, I repeat, not, be changing the colors or styles here. We want you to only look at the possibilities of enhancing some cool things for this site.

1. Postbit. First tweak is what they call "post bit" in the forum webmaster world. The post bit is the the area around your avatar as well as the area of the posted thread or reply. On this tweak, we just want you to pay attention to the "four dots" on this page, and click the dots that are directly underneath my avatar on that page.

When you click the dots, the boxes should advance, the first one shows some cool stuff, flags, photo album counts/comments, join date, member#, etc.; the second social networks (Myspace, Facebook); the third awards (that's coming here too); the fourth is location. Note: We can put whatever we want and arrange it however we want, so just look at the way it works, we would then adapt it to what is on GG. Yes or no, if yes, some feedback what you like or do not. If no, no feedback necessary.

2. Profile member's page. Please look at this page. Disclaimer: First, if you are not a registered user of this site, you are seeing one version, the guest version. Registered members see a different version. The main difference between the two, registered members would also see your "profile photo" (not your avatar, though they can be the same) to the upper left, about 200 pixels wide, 300 pixels tall. Plus they have other options such as sending PM's, emails, friendship requests, etc. Yes or no, if yes, some feedback what you like or do not. If no, no feedback necessary.

3. Forums When viewing a forum here or on Shotcritic.com you do not see any lead-in information. Look at this forum category and you will see the first few lines of the actual post/thread's as written by the original poster. Do you like that, a simple yes or no. Keep in mind, we can add this to one, two, three, etc., categories, the ones we choose, or none at all. Here's an example on the same site where it's like GG's current format with no lead-in words. You be the judge, with or without?

4. Video and audio files in posts. If you didn't notice on one of the prior links I sent you to above, there was an embedded .mp3 file. Currently we have a "video forum" on GG for your videos. The new software has a modification, not an upgrade, but modification, were we can tweak the code and from now on all you have to do is put the full URL to any video or audio file you have on the web, whether it be YouTube, GoogleVideo, or your own server. You would just past the URL in the thread/post and it will parse it to show you just like you see the mp3 player on this post. Do you like this option? Yes or no is all I need.

5. The Video Section. Part 1, look at the main video page on GG. Then open a new window and compare it to this page. That is main video page. If you notice, the second one is the version we want to put here, plus it allows HD video too!

Part 2, This is an example of the current GG video viewing page. Now open this page in a new window and compare the page (not the video itself). Notice the difference in the "Video Details" box under the video itself, like embed code for our forum, etc. Which do you like, old GG or new version?

To recap, just provide the following in your post here to each question in a numbered format as seen below:
  • 1. Yes or no. (feedback optional)
    2. Yes or no. (feedback optional)
    3. Yes or no.
    4. Yes or no.
    5. Part 1, choose old GG verses new version. Part 2, old verses new.

Let us know your feedback, and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! rg sends!

1. Yes- I like the information, but it seems there is plenty of room, why not have it all showing all the time and forget about the dots?

2. Yes

3. Yes

4. Yes

5. New and New

1, Yes

2, Yes

3, Yes

4, Yes

5, New - New

As far as the "dots" in Part 1 I think they are a good idea but as previously mentioned if you have the room why not just list the information although that could border on an informational overload so maybe it is best to keep that information concealed unless and until it is needed.

My only concern is unless people are actually aware that these changes are coming they will log into Garage Glamour one day and suddenly see four "dots" and wonder "what in the heck are those 4 dots?" but I think we can handle those questions easily enough.

1 - no, If I want to know that stuff I'll go to the member's profile page. That's what it's there for, isn't it?

2 - no opinion. I don't like the extra profile page crap that's been added in the new versions of vBulletin, so I usually turn all that crap off in my ucp anyway. That doesn't affect how other people might use it between themselves, though.

3 - no. I like a clean, non-cluttered layout. Additionally, your server's cpu load is going to go through the roof parsing the db tables for the "last post" and how much of it to display, which will measurably slow down the whole site, especially at peak periods.*

4 - yes

5 - new and new

*This is not a guess or extrapolation, this is based on my experience as a vBulletin admin for several different sites with very large user bases.
