Shot with a new model yesterday, did a quick edit on one of the pictures:

Like it? Hate it? Tell me how to make it better...

It appears you have used what us old timers call "map lighting". Two lights both about 45 degrees off center, and both are about eye level, which creates a shadow from the nose that is more or less horizontal. It also causes a highlight, which is "overshadowed" by that.

The background is distracting, in my opinion.

The shape of her face is nice so maybe the lighting could be either the old "Rembrandt" style, or "butterfly" lighting would work. At any rate, I would bring the lights up higher, and also the camera.

I don't hate it but I have a problem with it. It seems like you have two pictures there. One picture is of her praying (given hand position). The other picture is of her stabbing some guy in the face (okay kidding) her face just doesn't match up with the hands there is nothing peaceful about her facial expressions, which might be intentional, however if it is intentional the angle/crop might be able to give some sort of a better depiction of what you intend to get from it. I am of course assuming the intent is not a glamour shot and your purpose leans more on an artistic bent. If your intent is glamour I would have no clue what to do. The only technical aspect you might want to address is that the hands are cut off almost exactly at the wrist which looks kind of odd.

My first thought is that you have the light source set too low, and too close to the model. I would place it higher, so the light comes down to her face, rather than up. The shadowing tends to be more flattering.

Apart from that, I like the pose, the background and the model.

the lighting is incidental. the important thing was you were going for something. once you dial in the lighting, your creativity and point of view is what the viewer will respond to.

I am going to save that quote and pin it to my notice board as a personal mantra.

Igor, try cropping down from the top of the image to the top of her head so you don't see where the red and yellow background meet. To me it helps focus the attention on the model.
