I am always baffled at the connotation that those that are GWC's are horrible people. Maybe some people just do it for fun?

If I understand what a GWC is, it's simply a "Guy With a Camera." He wants to take pictures of pretty girls. There is nothing wrong with a guy wanting to take pictures of hot women. That is how I got into this mess. If he already has a full time job and just wants to do it for fun...again...what is the problem? What straight guy doesn't? The Playboy Mansion is Mecca to most straight males, or at least WAS Mecca.

The problem comes in when a photographer deceives a model into thinking he is something different than he is or that he wants something different than he wants. I think that self deception runs rampant on many of these websites. It's ok to say "I just wanna shoot hot women." Those pretending to be something greater than they are as professional photographers are usually believing it themselves. I know one guy that started calling the local Hooters girls he shot for free "clients." Clients? Really? Just embrace who you are and what you are doing this for.

I am all for wisely marketing yourself and I think it is important to embrace who and what you are. I am TRYING to shoot for fun more often these days. Not only work. It's actually as much a struggle for me to shoot for fun as it is for people trying to shoot professionally. It's counter-intuitive now.

I don't see that model I shoot for fun as a client. I see her as a model (or a GWP - a girl with pictures). There are so many people that want to shoot. Just be real with who ever you want to shoot with.

Models, the same goes for you. Don't act like or call yourself a Supermodel because you have a page on OMP, MM, PM, Myspace and every one of these sites. Even if you get a ton of hits. you are a successful model on the internet maybe. GREAT! That is wonderful. Being a successful at that is fine! Supermodel? Nah!

Just be real! It's all good!

Rick,

Your commentary hits all of the nails on the head. I think when I approach a woman I get the oh no it's a GWC look from them. As you mentioned a GWC doesn't have to always have negative connotations. The model comment rings true too. is one that everyone should take a look at. "Just be real!" is the best one of all...imagine how much better our world could be?

Thanks for posting Rick,
JW

You are certainly free to label yourself however you wish to, but why would you pick a label that you acknowledge has widespread negative connotations?

A guy who wants to shoot pictures for fun, no matter what kind, is generally called an amateur or a hobbyist photographer. A guy who has little interest in making good images, and just wants to get near/shoot pretty girls is often labeled a GWC. That's not a title I'd want associated with me.

And just exactly what is wrong with that?? According to the strict definition of a "professional" photographer I have seen some "amateurs" shoot stuff that would put 90% of the "pros" out there to shame.

I am an "amateur" photographer and I have been told that my stuff is pretty good, probably not as good as the "pros" but good and I am happy with that. I enjoy breaking out the camera every once in a while and photographing a beautiful woman and as long as I make her happy that's all that matters IMHO.

Perhaps I missunderstood. You 'were' a GWC but now you aren't ?

Your definition is not what many people use as the definition of GWC. As I said, you are free to label yourself any way you want to.

If you read what I wrote, I never said there was anything wrong with being an amateur or hobbyist photographer. Amateur or professional has little to do with images produced, some good, some bad in each camp.

The popular definiton of GWC is one who does not care about the image, he only wants to get near pretty girls, often nudes. I think that's kind of creepy, and have been told that by several models.

Just my opinion.

I'm an amateur but when can I refer to myself as a professional?
