Another model, another swimming pool. Rather than use a scrim to shade the model on this one I allowed the sun to create some highlights to her skin and hair while using a strobe to keep the shadows to a minimum.

Nice job balancing the light. She looks very comfortable and friendly.

Only because I am a very picky and observant photographer, I would have probably turned her a little more as some of the shadows are too distracting/unflattering.

I expect the background would have suffered or you didn't have anywhere else to stand that motivated this location.

Perhaps you could show us some samples of similar work that you have done that shows how it should look? Didn't get to see anything in your portfolio.

One of the negative effects of having to post an image when you offer a critique. If you don't post an image then your comment is worthless.

I'll look and see if I can find a photograph I have taken that doesn't have a harsh shadow going across the models breast.

I believe that a harsh shadow would be one that is extremely dark and high in contrast to other parts of the image, which is what I would have gotten from not using a strobe to offset the sunlight. Not one that is merely a slight shade difference.
If the scrim had been used there wouldn't be any shadows anywhere and probably would have gotten the old, "flat lighting" comment.

That's not true. You used a strobe, right? Add a scrim to it and you don't have the distracting shadow across her breast but you still have the shadows from the strobe.

Since I was standing beside the strobe, just where do you think a shadow from that light would have been cast? The only place that could happen is behind her.

I think that's a fine shot. The slight shadow adds depth and makes the image look more natural than a strobe filling all the shadows.

I wouldn't change anything.

Sorry, I was under the impression that it was a movable strobe. For the life of my I can't figure out how people create shadows on faces and bodies to create depth while in studio but it can't be recreated outside the studio.
