Ok, I hope I get a a good answer to this.

I have a model that asked me if I could do a editorial shoot but with a sexy angle to it. Any ideas of what we could try to do ?

Mike

Hmm, well the first thing that popped into my head when I read this, especially since there was another post about it, is to check out Helmut Newton. Also check out Sante D'Orazio, Ellen von Unwerth... um, that's all I can think of for now, but that should get the ball rolling.

If you want a sexy looking editorial, lingerie seems like a pretty good choice for the clothes.

Hope this helps!

Sam

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the help on this. I don't know, maybe I just am not getting what an editorial shot would look like. It should tell a story. I look at what should be an editorial shot and I just don't see a story.

Well people call it a "story", but it could also be called a "theme" or "series of related images". Take a look at Elle or Vogue, and half the time there'll be at least one editorial where the girl was shot in front of a cyc. Nothing there but the girl and what she's wearing, but what relates each image is the style of the clothing, the lighting, etc. etc. Or something like that, just an example.

But as far as the LOOK of an editorial shot, well, I think that can really run the gamut. It's not one individual shot, it's several pieced together.

I'm fairly certain the above is not what the model had in mind...

Do you people (not you Sam) look at anything other than cheaply produced soft porn?

BTW, cool editorial fashion links. Is that all you look at?

No I look at a lot of things. Fashion, Documentary (which I've shot on four continents), glamour, product/still life (especially food) and, sometimes, cheaply produced soft porn. Although to be honest, I'm not a fan of cheaply produced anything...

Photography is like writing. If you want to be an accomplished writer it is important that you read good literature. If you read pulp fiction, as fun as it might be from time to time, you will never learn to produce anything of real merit. If you want to write great literature, you must surround yourself with it.

The same goes for photography.

My point was we are supposed to be photographer's here. I would think more than one would have grasp of editorial fashion. Then again I don't know why I would, most commercial shooters have no concept of editorial fashion either...

I would talk this project over with the model and brainstorm ideas. Research these ideas and most likely this will spawn more ideas. Sexy images mean different things to everyone and I would consider comfort zones too. Lingerie is certainly a good choice (if the subject looks good in it), but a story with an elegant evening dress could be equally effective.

Good luck,
JW
