Its been a while since I have posted anything. Anyway to the subject, what are your thoughts on insurance? Do you have insurance on your equipment and or business? Do you see it as a wise investment? Is 300.00 per year worth it? Does having insurance make you more marketable because of less liability to a venue, either commercial studio or anywhere on location.

I do not shoot weddings, but I do often shoot in commercial venues where there are a lot of mosh pits etc.

sometimes it's not just nice to have

sometimes it's a requirement for a venue/job

$300 worth it? Depends on what the insurance covers. Sounds like you are referring to insurance on a small amount of equipment ....only.... for that low amount.

You also indicate you are referring to liability insurance. I doubt if $300 will get you much coverage for that.

I recently changed companies because my yearly $ amount was just over $2,000. That was liability and coverage on equipment and building.

My auto insurance for 2 cars was about $1,000.

So $300 seems like about a months worth of insurance in my case.

I am finding that venues require some form of liability insurance. A few bad apples ruined it for everyone else.

$300 dollars covers 20 grand in equipment, and liability for 50 grand for 1 year. Full coverage on my 2006 Jetta only costs me 450 per 6 months. Iowa is one of the cheapest places for insurance.

$50 thousand liability insurance is, in my opinion, not nearly enough. I guess you mean liability that covers injury to others if you are held responsible.

I am no expert on much of anything, however when people go after you it is not for thousands, it is for millions. I believe my libility was for one million, and that would not really be enough, but the cost is so high for more.

On the other hand, the auto insurance is much higher than what I mentioned.

Anyway, always read the fine print on insurance forms. Some coverage is limited, and the wording is such that unless your equipment is in a bullet proof container or stolen by a guy wearing a red baseball cap on Sunday afternoon, you are not covered (Naturally my last comments are tongue in cheek). But there are some interesting limitations on some insurance coverages.

I was thinking of joining PPA mostly for the insurance. Are there any PPA members here that can shed light on that as well?

Unless some of the coverage has changed or they have added something new, the only insurance provided in your dues is for indemnification, and not liability or insurance for losses.

I believe those are available from a private company through PPA.. sort of a group coverage situation.

I would suggest you compare costs of insurance with individual companies. At one time I found it to be no less expensive than my own insurance company.
