Ok, well, as some of you may remember, I had a model flake on me about a month back. Well, on that case, I did not contact her any further about any shoots or any sort of buisness. Anyways, not the point, just leading into my point. One of my normal practices is to meet with the model prior to any shoots to discuss what is to take place, exchange ideas, and the like. My question to you is do you do the same thing? Do you meet with the model prior to the shoot especially if you have never met the person face to face? One reason I do it is to use it as an indicator to see if they will show up for the shoot and if they take it seriously. Well, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Isaiah

If possible I do. Say at a Starbucks or something. I think it is a great way to break the ice which in turn leads to a more productive shoot. But unfornuately, living in a somewhat rural area it is often tough to do this. On average my clients must drive 2 hours to shoot with me, some more and some have even flown in. But needless to say, I always must speak to them the day before the shoot on the phone. Emails just down do it for me and I want to know there is actually somebody on the other end. But again..just because I speak or meet with them prior doesn't always mean they will show. Models will always be models

Very true, just because they show to the meeting, dosn't mean they will show to the shoot. But, I totally understand why you don't use it, being in your particular geographic location. But yeah, that's what I usually do, meet at a coffee house. Sorry, Starbucks has some of the worst coffee around, at least here in Fresno, trust me, the 7-11 has much better coffee, and for cheaper too, and 24 hours, lol. Well, thanks for your input though, it is appreciated.

Nope... no premeeting. In many instances the travel distances are just too far to meet conveniently. Many of the models I work with live in small towns more than 40 miles away.

But I do pay a lot of attention to pre-shoot correspondence, and how the model responds and how promptly. I provide a comprehensive outline of what we will shoot and where, what she is expected to bring, etc., early in the process. I also provide a phone number for questions or problems.

Yes, I've had my share of no-shows. But not so many any more. I've drifted away from doing many TFP/TFCD shoots. I've gotten a lot better at preselecting models I want to work with and I'm much more selective.

I've only had one pre-shoot meeting, and that was because the model wanted to show me he location for the shoot.

I find it's difficult enough for them to show up once for a shoot, let along another time just to meet. Most of the models I work with are very busy with both daytime jobs and shoots scheduled with other photographers.

When they show up for the shoot, we spend about 20 min going over what outfits they will wear, what their MU should look like and what they expect to get from the shoot.

Then, while they get ready, I set up backdrop and lights. Never bother to do this until the model is actually here.

Today's model has strep, left me a message last night...off to do yard work instead.

Mine are more clients than "models". In other words, they pay me to shoot them.

So I always have a face to meeting to see if they want to hire me and if the shoot is for boudoir recommend an additional pre-shoot meeting where they show me what they want to wear and I evaluate it to see how well it meets their shoot objectives and/or can I work with or around it.

This shows them I care and take the work seriously and they are getting value for their investment. These types of session are collaborative in nature.

If I was just going to "react to what they brought me" then I wouldn't bother with pre-meetings.

I have done three things hoping to get to know the model and put them and I at ease...also as mentioned getting to know something bout them. exchange ideas and going over what is expected..
I too have phoned them and talked and that works tue.
I think we've all been stood-up @ one time or another...
But even after a disappointment like "no-show"...we will go back for more..because something tell us we are photographers ment to capture and freeze a moment in time...
All the best .........

Tell me you're not meeting people at 7-11 because the coffee is better Isaiah! When I meet with clients (for wedding work, I very rarely meet a model for a consult - especially if its TF whatever) its always somewhere with a little atmosphere ..... Starbucks being the low end of the totem pole .... And after all, its about meeting the client and creating a good first impression, not the quality of the coffee ......

LMAO Mitch, that's funny! But in all fairness, to answer it, no, I'm not meeting them at a 7-11. But I am meeting them at this really nice coffee house, while not a Starbucks, it does have a bit more atmosphere than a Starbucks. But, either way, so far, it has worked out well for me. Only once did the meeting go awkwardly, and the decision was mutual that we don't shoot, just one of those awkward moments for all involved, but we did part on good terms, so at least that went well.
