I was just looking at some of the models in the Sports Illustrated galleries and was wondering who takes these pictures. As an example, the shots of Danica Patrick are not impressive, though the model looks pretty good. I can only imagine what she would look like with a good glamour shooter. Having seen some of the past SI Swimsuit editions, I am disappointed with the quality of most of the shoots that are on the SI site. Any others looked at them?

We had a long discussion recently about how bad the photography was. Here is the thread

Glad to know it wasn't just my ancient eyes finally going bad. Thanks as always.

Some pretty good photographers with varied backgrounds. Some are fashion shooters, some are "glamour" shooters, some are primarily sports shooters.

I think you are perhaps suffering a case of "unrealized expectations." Having seen past issues and been impressed, you probably expected the latest issue to bump the level up another notch. But realistically, there's a limit to what you can do in a magazine that's sold in grocery store checkout lines.

So you aren't happy with this year's issue. Hey, next year I'll bet you're satisfied because you'll have vague memories of being unimpressed with this year's issue.

The other part of it is that there were a bunch of new models. You haven't formed a "connection" with them as yet. Give it a year or two so that you recognize them, and maybe the pictures will "improve." So much for what I got out of sleeping in Psych 101 class...

I like Raphael Mazzucco's stuff. SI published a book of his stuff and it seems to have sold well.

SI also put out a book of the body painting from the last several years. Interesting, but the books were discounted significantly around Christmas, so apparently they weren't jumping off the shelves.

Walter Iooss. Jr., Antoine Verglas, and Stewart Shining have been around a while and know what it's all about.

There's one other consideration. I've heard it said that SI photographers shoot 40,000 to 60,000 images per swimsuit issue. Somebody has to sort through all that and pick the "winners." If that somebody is a dum-dum, well, you know what happens...

But whaddo I know, I'm still trying to get over the Cheryl Tiegs fishnet suit, and that was... ummmm... a number of years ago.
