Its just a way of having G1 host your posts that allow you to then post those images to other forums outside of G1. This is often useful if you don't have your own server space and/or you want to avoid the public type photo hosts that sometimes work and sometimes don't. However, a G1 logo is placed on the image. Here is an example of one of my photos from Image host.

I wanted to post this on a mtg forum, but didn't want to use my own server space.

Cheers,
rfs

I see that the image size is larger than that allowed in the portfolios - can I use it to link to images in G1 posts, i.e., for Critiques?

No, the size is not really any larger, its just that you have to link differently in a post from your G1 portfolio if you want to see the full size image you uploaded. I've covered this in my article on how to use the G1 portfolio system. But here is the short version. When you choose an image using the [images] link it creates BB code that looks like this:

[url=http://www.glamour1.com/photoplog/index.php?n=12171][IMG]http://www.glamour1.com/photoplog/images/35872/large/1_kelley090.jpg[IMG][url]

which would produce this image:

Click for larger version
Re: What is Image Host and why should I use it?

But if you edit the BB code that is inserted by the [Images] link, by removing the "large/" part of the IMG URL, then it will show the full size image which in this example looks like the following:

[url=http://www.glamour1.com/photoplog/index.php?n=12171][IMG]http://www.glamour1.com/photoplog/images/35872/1_kelley090.jpg[IMG][url]

Click for larger version
Re: What is Image Host and why should I use it?

It is much faster and easier to use the [Images] link, and then edit out the "large/" than it is to go the Image Host route. Notice how much crisper the second image is and it is also larger. Also the [Images] link has setup a click able image that takes a person to the image in your portfolio.

Cheers,
rfs

If your question is can you link an externally hosted image into a G1 forum regardless of its size ... the answer is yes.

Externally linked images can be larger than your G1 upload limit (150k or whatever it is) and as well can exceed the size guidelines (600px on the longest side).

That said, you may just need to adjust the way you resize and compress an image as the G1 limits are reasonable. There has been a thread or two about the best process, but in general you should:

1) Always work from the original or other lossless format (like PSD)
2) Resize in steps (RFS pointed out an action that would do this in another thread) to maintain higher quality
3) Apply a mild sharpening to your image if necessary
4) Save to JPG at 60% - 80% quality (I prefer 80%, but it really depends on the image)
