I had to get out of my studio back in June because the rent on it was just too much for what I was getting out of it. Because of that I haven't done much shooting since. It seems difficult for me to find a location to shoot glamour type images.

I was hoping to get a fresh perspective from some of you as to places I might shoot. I have tried the getting permission way and have been unsuccessful up to this point. It's not always a no, a lot of the time it is an "I'll get back to you" that never happens.

Just looking for some input.

Thanks

Well I have had some of the same issues, I also gave up a great studio because of rising expenses and costs to operate a studio. I now shoot free lance and have had to make due with what is available. Which in many cases is not that bad, the only draw back is you have to tote your gear in and out. You can rent time in a studio empty or equipped but that is usually a little expensive starting at empty for $ 45-75 an hour or equipped at $ 150. with a two to four hour minimum. I have had great success with Hotel Meeting Rooms, many have an air wall so you can break the area down into a Prep/MUA/Change area and a shoot area. This has worked well for everything from Commercial to Private shoots and it's affordable $ 100 - 500 for a full day, weekends are the best in many areas. Many hotels in business areas starve and are almost empty on the weekends. Other unknown resources are Dance rehearsal rooms ( Great Wood Floors), Theater rehearsal rooms and Band Practice rooms or Recording Studio. All are available starting at about $ 20 an Hour and many don't have a two hour minimum. All of these have their own flavor of color and texture and equipment ( Props) So don't be disappointed get creative, and guess what its cheaper then your own studio. This has also been a great source of recommendation and contacts for work either TFP or $PAID$ because of the many people you meet and have to integrate with, your just not stuck in your studio your mobilizing.

I used to try to get permission, but I've found it's more productive to ask for forgiveness, instead of permission. The worst that can happen is they throw you out. Haven't had the cops called on me yet.

Hi Dman65 have you got some Photo buddies close by that you trust? After i got kicked out of my space 4.5 yrs ago a close friend and i got together and started a photo co-op, There are four of us sharing a space now and the exp is shared 4 ways. everone runs their business from cell phones or their home phone. our co-op is made up of 2 guys and 2 gals. Our Shop is by appointment only so we do not have a open door studio so to speak. Our exp is not that much because we are located in a small town the rent is 350.00and all other exp run about 100.00 so we all have a good space and it cost everone about 140.00 a month. Good Luck hope this will give you some ideas

Hey Bill,

Thanks for the ideas. I will definitely have to check out the recording studios. I have a lady who wants to do a "rocker chick" shoot and that would be a great combo.

I had a college professor who used to always say it was easier to get forgiveness than permission.

That doesn't seem to work well for me for some reason. I am a pretty quiet person but for some reason I seem to stand out and they always notice me and tell me I can't shoot. I was shooting a family on an uptown sidewalk at 7:00 on a Sunday morning last year and security guards came and told me I couldn't shoot there.

There are regulations that say if your are shooting commercially in the city parks you have to get a permit which requires a million dollar insurance policy, etc. None of the shots I have done there have been for pay, but the police did not take my word for it. I ended up e-mailing the director of parks and rec and got an e-mail copy that said it was okay so I could show it to the police.

Hello Cliff,

Thanks for the idea. Maybe I will be able to find some folks in the area who would be interested in doing something like that.

Dman65, just another thought Check around in your area for private homes who maintain a yardgarden, i came across one in a city close to my area where the folks who own the place had a pretty landscaped yard with a hugh fish pond with a water fall about 10' high in it. These folks said i could use it any time i needed to just dont drive on their grass. can see a few of my photos in my portfolio. I do engagements, Seniors, and have done a commerical shoot there so far. Folks are real nice they are in there late 70's early 80's. i have not move photos over in to new sys yet so they still in the old portfolio sys

Scout your area for Bed&Breakfast places. Many are very nicely furnished and some even have nice backyards where you could shoot by the pool. Be upfront with the management and tell them you just want to shoot pictures and not necessarily stay overnight and have breakfast in the morning. As you will find prices will vary. I will be visiting Phoenix soon and that's what I'm going to do, shoot in B&B.
