I really liked RFS' post about his image much so, I decided to give Color EFex Pro a try. I thought I'd post a salvage of my own using the filters as well as other minor PS "tricks" ...

To start, this is an image of Akira Lane taken at GlamourCon in Chicago. Chicago had just had a major storm that caused power loss all over the metro area. The hotel only had partial power, so initial shooting plans were out the window.

The shot was in a hotel meeting room. I was lying on the floor looking up at her. The extreme angle was interesting -- and I liked the way the oval in the ceiling created a gold swath through the center of the picture. Here is a diagram and original image:

My first step was to clean up the background. There are light cans in the ceiling and a picture frame in the lower right corner that just clutter the image. Nothing a little cloning can't handle!

Next, some stray hairs need removing. (Much less painful for the model to do this in PS!) They're not all easy to see at this resolution. The most noticeable are at the back of her head in the amber light.

Then, I decided that as nice as the pink lingerie looked on Akira, it didn't fit so well with the gold oval and amber lighting. So, a little magic wand and careful selection editing (using the quick mask mode makes this much faster for me) followed by a hue adjustment, I changed the color of her outfit.

At last I was ready to play with Color Efex Pro. I applied a Dynamic Skin filter. While I moved the sliders all over the place to see the effects, I settled on 25% reach, 20% small details, 10% medium details and 5% large details. I didn't use any control points -- I need to figure out exactly what that does for me still.

This is glamour, right? I added a Glamour Glow filter and again stuck with a fairly light treatment. The filter actually had more of an affect on the background than on the model. I used 20% glow, 0% saturation and -24% temperature (those settings worked for me for this image, your mileage will vary!)

All these changes and the strong color created by the gel combined to give the image too much color for the look I prefer. I added an adjustment layer to drop the saturation slightly.

And finally, I added a copyright. Here, I added the text in white and then changed the blending mode to Multiply and set the the effects to Drop Shadow and Bevel & Emboss, resulting in my salvaged image before & after:

Anyway, I know many of you are well beyond me in both photographic and PS skills, but I hope this kind of thing helps convince someone to dig out a less than ideal image and see what you can make of it!

Thanks again to RFS for his post on the topic!

Excellent work. I still don't have Photoshop and more I see of this kind of work, the more I want to purchase it.

Thanks for taking the time to share the steps. They really tell the story.

Oh, the results of your effort looks great!
