Here is a little experiment in skin tones. The photo is a bit large since it has side by side comparisons between the photo as shot and one interpretation. One problem with shooting warm shots in camera is what it does to other colors in the scene other than the skin. In the original (on the left), you can particularly see the effect on the hair. The right photo shows a more natural color for the hair, and a different warmness effect. Here is the photo (this one is directly from my server):

On another note, I'm still trying to determine what G1's compression of uploaded images is doing. Here is the same shot above showing the "large" image that is produced by G1's compression after an upload to my Portfolio.

Radical skin tones ...

By the way, when posing Holley for this shot, I asked her to give me an "irritated" or "upset" look. I think she did a good job.

Any comments, notes, ideas and suggestions are of course welcome.

Cheers,
rfs

I appreciate the time you take to explain things and the examples you use. It helps out a great deal. As for the look, I have seen it many times... unfortunately.

Seems like the right, large image, has some blown highlights, especially the forehead.

This shot shows one of the big problems I have with some shoots where the skin tone of the face and that of the chest are so different either from how they tan or from the makeup and its reaction to the light. But her eyes do show better in the right hand shot and that is so important to the shot.

It is a real world problem. Models will often have a lot more attention paid to the facial make up than body makeup. So if they have a good tan, and light makeup, then you have a tonal range to deal with. In this case, I wasn't really worried about that since I was more picking this photo for the experiments that I was doing rather than its other merits. I was testing how well CEP 3.0's "Control Points" worked for protecting portions of the photo from the effect of the filter.

But if you have the above problem, one way to deal with it fairly easily is to use Photoshop Mama's Powder Actions which give the ability to quickly deal with issues like this. Its also great for general skin cleanup.

Cheers,
rfs
