i will be traveling to Ocho Rios in Jamaica at the end of the month. Can anyone provide any tips on traveling in jamaica and shooting tips. Are there any must shoot that i somewhat near Ocho. I plan on travel to bob marley (nine mile) area. The usual Dunns River. if there is anything near ocho please list i would like to have somewhat of a plan before getting there. Also is common to hire a taxi driver all day for some the planned shoots. I would like to have someone that knows where to go and see somethings that me being the tourist may never of known about. Thanks! I'll post in the general fourm also. Matt

When I was in Jamaica, a frequent traveler told me that it is much better to learn the local currency and pay in Jamaican dollars. Although the locals love US currency, you will probably pay more by using it. I found this to be true even at an American-owned establishment. The cover charge at a rather famous bar-restaurant in Montego Bay was about 25% higher if you paid with US money.

Thanks Tom! How do the locals feel about taking their picture? I'm still wondering how to approach this. I think for the most part i will try talking with them and see at that point. I know i have had a few people in the states give me some nasty looks, even when traveling in mexico i was asked to not photograph a food stall that i was at. Which i kindly said no problem thanks have a great day. But this is another county. I honeslty don't wish to offend anyone. I would rather be on the safe side. Thanks again!

Be careful. I have been there and believe me, there will be many happy to part you from your equipment/money. -Jim

I didn't take any pictures outside the resort. It was a convention and we stayed at the Jamaica Grande in Ocho Rios. We were warned not to venture outside the property unless we were on a tour, like the ones to Dunns River (I skipped that).

I did walk out to the street, where there was an outdoor market. Everyone has their hand out either for a donation or to sell you something. While in Montego Bay, I took a "taxi" to the nightclub. It was $10 US each way (about six blocks, but I didn't want to walk it at night). He did try to get $20 for the return trip because it was "after midnight."

Jim's advice is good -- be careful.
