The B/W conversion looks pretty good. The selective focus doesn't really look like selective focus to me. I looks more like selective blurring and in my opinion does not add any thing to the image.Click for larger version

The conversion looks good to me, albeit a little cold (uncalibrated monitor, even moreso uncalibrated eyes) - a bit like selenium toning.

Perhaps because of the texture of the fur, to me, the blurring effect looks almost like the old "twist the zoom during exposure" effect, but not quite so dramatically distorted as that. You're not really mimicing a selective depth of focus so much as blurring everything except the desired object of attention. For example, on the viewer's left, the region about her ear has a different apparent DOF than that around her ear on the viewer's right. To me, used to film and more-or-less "straight" printing, it's visually confusing to see "unnatural" optical behavior.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Image-making is changing, perhaps rather like the change painting underwent when photography was born and it became apparent that straight, representational painting was not going to be the main application of an artist' efforts. I'm not saying that you're the JMW Turner of photography, only that each of us views things within the context (baggage?) of our training.

Forgive the rambling - I've been viewing too many European photographers' sites, where digital effects seem to be being embranced wholeheartedly.
