I have a bid of $750 to sell the rights to one of my images of a flower on a stock photo site. This image has never sold at art festivals or in galleries around the area. Since I'm new to the stock scene, I'd like some advice without tipping my hand on a stock site discussion board. What do you think I should do? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Doc

Doc,

Since we share a name, I figured I'd better reply.

I've sold all rights to magazines, commercial users, etc., and in my experience money in your pocket is better than money in someone else's. I'd take the $750, kiss the rights to the flower pic goodbye and buy some Christmas gifts. If the shot hasn't sold up to now, it probably won't, so if a buyer wants it, let it go. Take more flower shots next spring.

The belief that pictures in your files will keep earning year-after-year is reassuring, but unless you've got exceptional images that nobody else has (Hillary Clinton nude, etc.), it just ain't so. Maybe it works for Jay Maisel, but I think the rest of us should cash in when we can.

Just my opinion.

Best,

Can you tell us a little more about the offer? Is it something like exclusive rights for all media in perpetuity? That is, do they want to secure all rights for all current and future media types for ever and ever? Or is the offer for something like a year's usage, or a brochure or greeting card with a print run of so many units?

If you don't know, then you need to find out things like:
How will the image be used?

How many different ways do they wish to use the image? (web, trade publication, annual report, greeting card, ???). Each media type should be counted as a separate use.

If it's something like a brochure, advertisement, or annual report, how big will the image appear? 1/4 page, 1/2 page, full page, etc.

For how long do they wish to use the image?

How large will the circulation be? (Local, regional, national, international)

In my opinion, $750 would be a fair price for licensing the image to a greeting card company who was going to print 50,000 cards. It would be a ridiculously low price for an all out buyout for ever and ever.

I was notified last week that the image has been selected and incorporated in a design proposal for a paperback book cover. Right now I'm sworn to secrecy about the details, but when things are finalized I'll let ya'll know what happened.

Thanks for the comments,
Doc
