Ok! I bought a new Canon 40D and I now need a decent lens. If you pro's were going to buy two lenses, what would you recommend? I need one for all purpose and one for portrait work.

Please help me out guys.

24-70mm 2.8 and 70-200mm 2.8 IS
The 70-200 f4 is a nice one too for portraits. Get this to save money if you don't shoot much sports.

You'll never regret the 85mm F/1.2, my favorite of all. Then I also use the 70-200mm F/2.8 IS lens, rocks for a zoom. All the best, rg sends!

I use the 17-55 2.8IS for most stuff and the 70-200 2.8IS for most of the rest. If you are limited to two lenses that is what I recommend. Beyond that look into primes. The 50 1.4 and the 85 1.8 are both excellent lenses and neither will break the bank.

Great recs above. I'd suggest the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM be in your consideration set for a "general purpose" lens. I also own the EF 20-200mm f/2.8L IS USM and the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM (a II version is now available).

Did Canon custom make that one for you?

Don't use Canon but I wanted to point out the fact that not many boards this size have the owner (Rolando) reading the threads, let alone commenting.

That, Rolando, is one of the things that makes this forum THE glamour forum.

I appreciate Rolando's opinion and suggestion very much... As well as everyone else's for sure. But as said above, "It is great to have the owner of the site read, comment, and give his opinion" to me.

I respect all the photographers here and Rolando is my hero. I have read his book and almost all of his photo tips on this sight.

Thanks Rolando! You Rock!

Bob,

Thanks, I do my best to read the forums and reply when I can. This year has been real hectic, I practically tripled my workshops to spread the gospel of photography while doing a book tour of sense, along with my Calumet European tour of three countries earlier this year, along with six Virgin Island workshops.

I was sitting next to a friend of mine, an Associated Press photographer last night while shooting an NBA game and we joked about how in the past three months this is the longest period I've been home. It will be six days this Monday, as Tuesday we're off to the Virgin Islands again. Most of the trips lately are followed by about 1 to 3 days at home (office) since this past August. I'm going to slow down some next year, but it's been worth it, traffic on G1 is up and growing and soon we'll fix all that is broken.

I do need to spend more time here and participate more, but I'm always behind the scenes along with Mike, Ralph, Corey, Mark and now even Igor is helping along with the other forum mods.

Ultimately it's the people here who make G1 the glamour forum. Thanks for being a part of the family and community here. All the best, rg sends!
