Isn't asking what kind of lights someone uses to create a photo similar to asking a chef what kind of pans he uses to cook with? My point: who the hell cares? It it's good, who cares how it got there (as far as name-brand goes anyway...mechanics of the shot are a totally different discussion!)

Good day!

Mike

Mike

The original poster made the statement about brand for a completely different reason...he was referring to a thread of conversation around the evils of EWS.

I asked because I had an interest in that particular light and was glad to have the feedback on it from someone who had used it.

I now return you to your pots and pans!

I hope no one took my post in the wrong light (no pun intended). I was trying to make a funny but perhaps I didn't succeed. My point was that when a chef makes a great meal, it certainly can't be attributed to the pans he used. It was his skill as a chef. Similarly, it's the photographer who can make or break an image regardless of the brand of lights.

Good day to all!

Mike

I agree in theory, but since the light quality shows in the result, maybe the lights are more like the herbs and spices...and asking a chef about those makes sense! (Just to be clear...I'm now the one attempting to make a joke!)

Looks as though you were able to make your opinions known here and this time several others made their opinions known as well that did not go along with yours but questioned it instead, so to DaveB who thinks that everyones opinion is correct inlcuding his own, to which of these opinions that don't agree with each other should all of us be listening to as if they were all correct and based on complete knowledge of photography and lighting?

Here, here!!! I see your point (besides the one on my head). All kidding aside, I have heard that various brands are spot-on in color temp each time they flash while others may be, uh, less than stable in that regard. I have a set of four Speedotrons and to the best of my knowledge, they've been tried and true every time. However, I sure wish I could afford some really super good strobes that I could control better. I don't think my lighting skills are particularly good and I STILL suck at posing models and just people in general but I think if I had some really good tools to work with, it would certainly help me out. As a musician, I know the importance of learning on the best instrument possible in order to measure one's improvements and so I suspect that really good lighting equipment would also fit into that line of reasoning. I think the Speedos are great but I know there is much better with much more control. It's just that I have champagne taste and a damn beer budget.

Good day!

Mike

Well, I certainly was not giving my opinion to try and gather a consensus on this issue. I was merely sharing my thoughts. I can't take credit for giving someone else their opinion; that's their stuff. Opinions are called opinions because they aren't necessarily factual or correct. Hell, look at our wonderful politicians. They all have opinions and agreement with them is purely subjective. If I want facts, I'll go back to doing geometry and start proving my postulates with known theorems but as for photography, who can really say "you are right" or "you are wrong?" It's very, very subjective. Hell, I had a discussion with an artist the other day about Picasso. I would love to have one of his paintings only because I could then sell it and never work again but artistically I think he stuff sucks beyond belief. That's my opinion and I know it differs from many others. Does it make me wrong? F*** NO. It makes me human with a purely subjective perspective based upon my own tastes.

That being said, I stand by my opinion of your photo. You shared it. I shared what I thought. In my book that means end of story. Can we bury this ongoing pernicious blather and move on to better things now like looking at more photos and sharing more opinions?

Good day!

Mike

To ignore the your attempted joke for a moment, take your comment seriously, and further torture this analogy a little bit, the herbs and spices in lighting would be gels and reflectors and gobos. You might ask the chef if he used tarragon or parsley (a 1/2 CTO or 3/4 CTO gel), but you probably wouldn't obsess over what brand.
