I've been very upset and pissed after being scammed by another new local photographer. I'll keep it short, but after getting a call from a "husband" about shooting his wife he wasted 1 hour of my time, pretending to be someone he wasn't, trying to learn as much as he could about my business, how I shoot...list goes on. What is so amazing is that in a industry that is solely based on professionalism and word of mouth, someone can be so devious and unprofessionalism. I just don't understand how one can succeed trying screw everyone around them. I think part of this is his age, but am I wrong, when your outside the circle of photogs, new to the area, trying to get in to the circle of models and professional photographers area, the last thing you do is build bad reputation.

He called me back asking for a model release so he could read it over, at that point I called is bluff, since he gave me a email that matched his web site business, and I gave him a 15 min a$$ chewing. I guess being a nice guy, I fell victim to his scam. Just interested in thoughts on this and venting!

I'm not in the same game as you so that wouldn't happen to me. I have noticed that its what you get that matters not how you get it. Which I find problematic.

I have talked to prospective models and told them my idea and location and they never reply. Thats not a problem, my name isn't big enough yet. What gets me is I check that models port a few days later and find she has found a photographer to shoot her using my ideas. More often than not bad photos too. Makes it hard to explain what you have in mind to a model for a TFCD shoot without giving her enough of an idea for her to steal it.

This is done all the time in most other industries. In fact, there is actually a job title for people who do it full time....secret shoppers. Yep, you can actually hire a person who will go call a whole of list of competitors and give you a report.

Not saying you're wrong to feel it was unprofessional. Just offering that 1) perhaps you've been shopped before and the caller was slicker than this guy, and 2) you'll likely be shopped again.

I usually invite potential competitors over for coffee... there is more then enough business for all and I want to compete on services and vision, not rates.
