Rightclick..... Yes it does in this case. Even if they turn off javascript so they can right click they are left with "spacer.gif" as an option, NOT the image.

99.99% of the users out there are left with only the ability to snag a screenshot of images on one of my locked-down galleries.

Even if they pour through the code and manage to find the image, it is always a 72dpi image very small resolution image.

This isn't just only the java-based right click thingie - it is much more advanced.
I was able to copy any of the images on your site within about 30 seconds using two different methods. The problem with right click is that it adversely affects people with disabilities, such as my self, who use the right click for many accessibility reasons including "mouse gestures" to overcome some of my browsing problems. There is a long thread on this subject that you might want to look at. It is here

I can't say I agree with all your posts in that thread. However, I do understand what you are trying to relay.

It is pretty difficult for the average user to obtain the images. Also, you mentioned you got them so fast - curious if you actually looking at what the right click of the image gives you a spacer and not the actual image or you just saw you can disable right-click? I'm mainly referring to galleries say under People > any of the girls at the top for example.

I've had a few IT friends try to get images and it was quite difficult with smugmug versus other hosting platforms - much moreso then the typical java-lockdown-only type thing.

As I'm sure you know, the latter "protection" with spacer.gif is known as cloaking; having a transparent gif over the actual image. Are you then dipping into the browser's cache? pouring over the code to find the .jpg?

Please note I'm just replying to the point. Your site design is great -- and I really like your photography! While I certainly found the photos in the People album to be inspiring, I must admit I spent more time looking at the M3 photos. And that, probably makes me an auto geek!

The point is that the people who want to steal the images to use on their own sites or for other disreputable purposes are the very people who know how to use the techniques to get the photos (in other words, they are not your average user). I have used the transparent gif method in the past and it is okay for defeating the casual user, but does nothing to defeat the user who knows about screen captures or the browser cache, etc. In fact, here is a little example that I posted several years ago about the transparent gif trick:

http://rfredricksmith.com/phototrick/

I did leave a loophole in the above example however.

And yes, I was able to capture any image on your People page and I was getting the largest image available by using a second trick.

Cheers,
rfs
