What is considered "standard" for MUA rates? I've recently started involving several makeup artists with my shoots and I'm finding them to be all over the place in what they charge. From $35 rate fee for hair and makeup (one look); to $50 per look, to hourly rates of all sorts.

I'm sure they vary with their experience, but I was curious what you all might be seeing?

Don't know about rates in the Midwest but here, on the West Coast, we're usually looking at $350-500/day or $125-175 to paint and coif hair on one model. That doesn't include sticking around for any touchups that might be needed. I have seen MUAs go as little as $50 for one girl, but that's usually when rent's due and they're short on fundage.

Thanks for the feedback.

There are alot of "makeup artists" around here I have a feeling. The ones that are really busy and very professional seem to be $75 hour or so here in St. Louis.

I've been quoted $200 for 3 looks (makeup/hair) with no time mentioned. That's upper midwest, no major city/market nearby.

But generally, things are negotiable...

Then again, makeup is not rocket science, and if you can see colors normally and blend well... there's always D.I.Y.

Hair is a little different... Dunno that I'm up for that just yet, but anything's possible.

I think MUA's charge pretty much what the market will accept for their area.

As to doing it your self, that is not usually advisable due to the unavoidable touching of the model that could happen in this case. Now you might never have any problem, but I can imagine all sorts of scenarios where this could come back to byte a male photographer, especially.

I always thought Peter Gowland had the best approach.

Cheers,
rfs

As long as your tastes in eye shadow go beyond your tastes in text colors, you will be fine.

On a more serious note, there are legal issues. Perhaps things are different where you are, but I am not aware of any jurisdiction where you can charge for any activity that includes cosmetology (includes hair and makeup) without passing a test to get a license. So, D.I.Y. @ Y.O.R.

Hmm that is interesting - should I be checking they are licensed? The ones I've used so far (two different girls) probably were - they had the whole song and dance with them to do the job as far as equipment.

Legally however... is it important for me to ask?

I am not a lawyer and I don't even play one on TV. That being said, providing cosmetology services without an appropriate license, whether you do it yourself or provide an employee, would potentially expose you to a fine from the appropriate local authority. I don't know what the issues would be if you were simply passing along the charges from an independent sub-contractor into a single bill for the client.

Different states have different requirements. I know you have to be licensed in Florida to do hair and makeup on shoots. For New York and Los Angeles I don't think you do unless it is doing hair for a film. Kevyn Aucoin, Sam Fine are top artists that do all kind of celebrities (Kevyn is dead now....obviously) but started at makeup counters and never had a cosmotology license (from my understanding) because it is not required for "entertainment"...print, commercial and video.

For the Midwest it is the same (unless some new law is out that I'm not aware of) that a makeup artist doesn't have to have a cosmotology license UNLESS you are working in a salon.

I hope that helps.

Oh! I forgot...about rates... In the Midwest rates can run about $50.00 per look with a 3 look minimum. Not all makeup artists do hair, but when I charge for paid tests I do makeup and hair with one price.

If you need a makeup artist let me know because I also teach makeup artists and I might be able to help you. Email me at candacecorey@yahoo.com.
