Thanks for providing some specifics. I can never remember who requires what and where outside of my immediate area, so I always just recommend extreme caution and research.

Jason,

I worked with quite a few MUA's who charged anything in between $35.00 for hair and makeup to $200.00 for a 4 hour shoot with assistance and as many looks as I wanted.
You can get away not having their licence up to date, as long as you don't hire them. I always have the model pay for their on make up. I just help them find the right person who can do a good job.
Not to many girls will hire a person who charges $50-75 per look with 2 looks minimum. That's crazy. I might as well put the camera down and go to cosmetology school, or just improvise, do it myself and call it high fashion.

For sure - I've snagged a couple of local MUA that appear to be pretty good; haven't been able to get in touch with Erica though.

Mainly because of the schedules we and the MUA's have, I need a couple of them to be able to have one available for each shoot.

Thanks again.

I dunno... most of the makeup application I've seen didn't involve much skin to skin to touching. Mostly it was sponge to skin, pencil to skin, brush to skin...

And there's nothing to prevent a wife or girlfriend actually doing the application stuff under supervision.

On a more serious note, there are legal issues. Perhaps things are different where you are, but I am not aware of any jurisdiction where you can charge for any activity that includes cosmetology (includes hair and makeup) without passing a test to get a license. So, D.I.Y. @ Y.O.R.
Ummm, first of all who charges? Ya gotta remember I'm am one of the few amateurs here (at least, openly admitted amateur), even though most of the respondents to the recent poll seemed to not actually make much income from photography...

Secondly, I am deeply offended that my creative use of text color and font are being impugned. At least when you read my posts, you know who wrote it...

Finally, blue eye shadow ( O O ) is quite popular... so there!

Ask for references or ask other togs how they liked working with that person.
Unfortunately I worked with some, who I will never work with again. Even if they were free.
I think a good MUA should be able to give you what you ask them to do, no matter what skin tone the model have. Be that a redhead, blond, brunette or black.
One of my pet peeves is to look in their case and judge them by the cleanness of it. I know they're not paid by the hour, but if they're looking for something and take half an hour finding it in their cluster, it's not going to make me happy.
Another one is used application sponges in the case. For one thing they just don't belong there, second I would probably go ape **** if I see one actually being used again.

Here in Wichita, we do not have to have a license, when I started doing this for our business I looked into it to make sure. I was ready to go to school for it but found out later that I did not half to. Most of the cosmetology schools around here only provide a two-week training for MU and the rest is for nails and hair. I could not see spending another 5000.00 for that just for two weeks of mu training. As for my rates, I do half day and full day rates, or will do a quick paint and go if that is what the photographer wants. I can provide hair also but not to the extent of a professional hair stylist. Takes me about 20 minutes to do a quick clean look and then we can build from there (this is on a model that has good skin, if they do not can take up to 45 for the first look) if you are wanting hair then the first look will usually take anywhere form 30 minutes to an hour. The more experience an MUA has and the more clients she/he has the more the charge will be. When you are requesting the services of an MUA remember they are also doing something for a living so please don’t squelch on the price they give you. If it is a new person starting out there prices will be lower then an established MUA. I know I still have a lot to learn but have put my blood, sweat and tears into learning everything I already have.

I don't think there is a standard.

I have paid anywhere from free ( they wanted to work with me) to $1K for one look ( hair, body, fingers, & toes)

When I work with a new artist I watch them carefully... not as much for the application skils but their hygine. I was taught very early about how important it is to use disposalable applicators.

The only time I ever sent a MUA away was when she showed up with dirty brushes ( and nothing to clean them) and no applicators for the liquids.
