Used a soft focus technique on this image. Shot with continuous hot lights.

That image looks too over-retouched to me. The skin on the face doesn't even look real to me.

If this was the look you were going for and you are both happy, than that really is what matters right?

I just think there's a huge epidemic here of making the skin look so flawless that it looks plastic. Nice lighting though.

Just my opinion.

Here's an image of professional model and actress Walker Hayes from my workshop yesterday.

I do have to agree, the skin does not look natural. I think she is beautiful but a little to plastic barbie looking.

Others have already comments about the plastic look. I know that is often a problem and it is easy to overdo it in PS, but it can be so much fun playing with the image in PS that we get carried away. Always keep a 2nd copy of the base image open in PS so you can do a running comparison as you work or work in layers and turn off all the layers but the original to see how far you have gone in the skin work.

But the photo also has some scene problems. There are distracting elements such as the lamp shade growing out of the back of the head, and the red elements behind her as well as hot spots on the sheets, etc. I find that these soft diffused images look better if the scene is very simple rather than having lots of details. Look for the little things that might draw the eyes of the viewer away from the subject and then compose to get rid of them.

So what you are saying is, that the skin processing in addition to what the soft focusing did to the image looks too much like what we see from Andy McFarland, Johnny Crosslin, FrankD and BobbyG. I will keep that in mind.

I can only speak for myself, and I don't really follow the posts or images of the other photographers you just mentioned, so I can't agree or disagree with what you are saying.

As I said, if this is what you and the model were after, you succeeded.

IMO, the skin is too over-processed. Sometimes my opinions suck. LOL

I wish I could explain why but all those people you listed are masters of there craft. I like the less photoshoped look but it seems most clients aka models like the look of the over photoshoped images because it makes them look perfect. Jim, your work is so good most of the time but this image just does not look right to me. It just does not look like your style.

Two of those other photographers are current active members here on a fairly regular basis while Andy McFarland used to be a participant here and was one of the local favorites when it comes to displaying swim suit models at the beach. Johnny Crosslin has not.

Perhaps this is more of what you were looking for. No skin smoothing. Only some blemish removal and color correcting with some contrast and sharpen for the web.

I like the second image, slightly retouched. It makes the model look real.
