My lifelong continuing education in photography brought me again, along with 14 others photographers, for a lighting workshop in Santa Barbara. Robert, Ray Savage, model Hilda Castillo and MUA Gloria Noto did a great job. This is the 3rd time I have watched and listened to the experience and mastery of Robert Sanders.

I had forgotten why I use a 39x72 scrim with my main light and tether my camera to a laptop...I had picked that up from him. I found out Saturday that Dean Collins had originally promoted scrims as a light modifier many years back.

I left with new ideas and ways to light a model but most importantly, I learned we need to experiment and change the way we look at lighting. I also realized I use way too much light and that shadows are a good thing.

Jim, I'm glad to hear that there are several others out there that aren't afraid of having a shadow in an image. Not to knock anybody, but while there is a place and time for it, I'm not a huge fan of thowing a ton of light on the model removing all of the shadows. Now to do something with the boring solid color backgrounds. What? No props? Hmmmm, looks like I'm gonna have to work on this one too.

I know that I am one with beauty, And that my comrades are one. Let our souls be mountains, Let our spirtis be stars, Let our hearts be worlds.
