We had a little time to goof around in the VIP High Stakes Parlor at Planet Hollywood Casino and Resort in Las Vegas the morning after the padgent.

And not 10 feet away (camera left) Zac Grimaldo was shooting the "Top Ten" winners all stacked up on the couch. Al la Herb Rits but non nude.

However, the Spike TV dudes were over with us diggin' our shot setup and Mindy's personality.

I used two monolights... One with 30 degree grid at camera left to light the model's face in the mirror. And the second was further back at camera right. I needed a 20 degree grid on the right unit to push the narrow beam all the way to the back corner. Soft boxes would of spread the light too much and I would of lost that loungy feel.

Everything you see here was done in camera with exception of some color saturation changes to make the red velvet pop.
I had the "Ladies" sign printed in the hotel's business office.
The doorway in the curtain didn't go anywhere... it was actually a secret passage cut thru to the service hallway. Occasionally, a constructon worker would come back through the curtain with a WTF? look.

Sometimes check your lips...Always check your heel.

I think the toilet paper was a bit over done. Great idea and great concept. A few feet of paper would have done it for me, not a whole roll.

Yea Dave,
I actually have shot this set up before in the long hallway leading to the ladies room in the panio lounge of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Atlanta. To make this work, the location has to show class and sophistication.

In that setup, I did use a few feet of tp attached to the foot of the model fixing her lipstick in the mirror. I wasn't pleased. And it has never been shown. And never tried to fool anyone into thinking I was satisified with the image. The shot was missing the visual connection of how I see the progression of the viewer when they look at the image.
First the mirror, then the model, then the toilet paper, finally the restroom.
Soon I realized that the toilet paper was in fact "the star" of the shot. The eyes follow the trail deeper into the image to the "oh I get it" stage.

Of course, this would never really happen in real life. It would break off, she would see it, or someone would tell her. That is what makes the whole absurdity of this image.

Case in point:
Smokey and the Bandit (1977) - When sheriff Buford T. Justice leaves the resturant pulling a long trail of toilet paper off the roll which happens to be attached to his glasses. Do you really think it would of created as much impact if he just had a few feet attached?

I know everyone is different, I did shoot it the other way and it just didn't work for me. Kinda like she has tp on her foot...so what?

Take the common everday.... twist it around and make people stop on your image to see what is going to happen next. Not like a feeling they have been there done that. Or at least that is what I try to do.

There are other things that I feel are wrong with the photo that I didn't quite tweek enough. Maybe next time I try to shoot it. But then again, time to move on and shoot something new.

But DaveB, thanks for your input and comments about the shot. I love talking about stuff like this.
