ok, im moving to Springfield Missouri for school. Im thinking about going to work at Lifetouch, or Glamour shots. what do you guys think of this job venture? also, im going to try to do some photography on the side (just portraits, seniors, business, and family) what do you think of these prices?

Session = $40
packages
a) 3 poses, 2-8x10, 6-5x7, 36-wallets = $130
b) 2 poses, 2-8x10, 4-5x7, 32 wallets = $100
c) 4 poses, 3-8x10, 8-5x7, 48 wallets = $180
d) 1 poses, 1-8x10, 4-5x7, 16 wallets = $55
e) 3 poses, 3-8x10, 4-5x7, 36 wallets = $150
f) 2 poses, 1-8x10, 4-5x7, 24 wallets = $90
g) 6 poses, 5-8x10, 12-5x7, 96 wallets = $300

A la carte
4x6 = $7
5x7 =$12
8x10 = $25
11X14 = $60
16x20 = $90
20x24 = $125

If you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

Prices are totally market driven. You'll have to see what others are charging in the area for the same services. Also you will need a portfolio of work to show prospective customers. You won't be able to show them pictures of plants or insects to convince them to let you do portraits, seniors, etc.
As far as working for Glamour Shots, etc., I suppose this would be a related type of business and you'll probably learn something from working there.
Cheers,
rfs

Any Time you can get behind a camera is good and you will learn some about lighting there.
Prices? you will work that out as you go.
Good luck.

From Pavel with his permission

Study a lot. Take a course at the local JC. Learn from sites like this one. Lurk, and ask questions. Do the homework...practice a lot. Go on lots of shoots. Learn PhotoShop. Get some books, instructional CDs/DVDs.

Keep your mind open and experiment. Harmonize what all you hear and learn.

Not all pros know what the heck they're doing. Not all amateurs are ignorant.

Learning photography for future pay is a full time job.

Find a mentor, and/or a shooting buddy that you can learn from.

Look at lots of pictures from others, on the net and other places. Go to galleries, museums...ask yourself why a composition works...find out why.

The learning never stops.

Now a word from me.

Glamour Shots has 16 basic poses and no fooling around with the lights. What you gain from them is working with people. Lifetouch will be a grind taking school pictures with minimal training. Two clicks of the shutter and "next."

Good luck.

Rick D.

Well Photoguy, your question has a long answer but I will try to give you the Readers Digest version.
1. Out of respect to the professionals giving you all the advice your receieving.
2. People don't buy because of price. Price is usually about 5th of the list of why they came to you.
3. The people that do buy because of price need to go to Wal-Mart. Alway keep in mind that you can say no to business. There are plenty of great Wal-Mart customers out there.
4. You don't want to be known as the cheap guy in town. People perceive cheap as lesser quality.
5. People understand that they must pay for quality. If they don't explain it to them.
6. You can not stay in business at those prices unless you do a great volume of business.
7. You will recieve less complaints.

I could go on. When I go up in price I alway make more $ the next year and work a little less or the same.

If you haven't heard of Charles Lewis, see if you can get some of his tapes or videos. The man is a little wierd but he knows how to market.

The Lagos' in Joplin are twice as high as I am and is doing quite well.

I hope this helps. Please don't take any of this the wrong way. My opinions are things I have learned in 30 years of photography.

Wish you the best
Robert
