As a photographer I try to follow the TV show "Germany's next top model" and find out what the pro photographers use for lighting.

The last shooting was a shooting (3/4) for the german Cosmopolitan. You can look at it at the website of the TV company "Pro7" (http://www.prosieben.de/lifestyle_ma...oplayer/39275/)

As far as I can see, they were using a 5 light setup. 2 Lights lighting the (red) background, flagged by 2 bookends (?), the one to the left of the photographer was black, the one on the right was white - for use as a reflector. Behind the photographer 2 big softboxes were placed, 1 quite low (rectangular, lying on the ground) and one octobox about level with the models face . In front of the model they had a piedestall with a silver refelctor lying on top. One umbrella light was positioned left(!) and in front of the model and quite high.

Now there are a couple things I don't understand about the lighting used:

1. First of all, they did not use any "real" hairlight visible in the video. If any, it must have been directly above the model.

2. no rimlight was used.

3. I don't understand the purpose of the umbrella light. Remember, this ist the side where the bookend is painted black... I can understand the need for some "hairlight" (allthough this one was not positioned behind the model), but that light positioned there would defeat the purpose of the black bookend, right?

And as far as the posing goes, the models were shot with the hips facing the camera.

Am I seeing things right ?

CU

Hard to tell much from the video. But the ceiling appeared to be white so there was probably enough bounce from the ceiling of the front light to give hair light. Two keep the lighting ratio from being too flat, I think is the reason for the black bookend on one side and white on the other. You are essentially subtracting light on the black side and adding light on the white side. The reflector in front on floor keeps shadow from under eyes, etc.
Cheers,
rfs

And the umbrella on the left does not take way the effect of the black bookend ?

I'm not sure you can really tell much from the video. For example which lights were really firing. Were some of the lights really for the video camera? Short of a lighting diagram, video of a lighting setup often leaves much to be desired.
