Rolando's myspace thread is great. I am wondering about the details for actually doing such a site. How much time do you spend with it? What about Spam? How did you start getting noticed/freinds?

To quote one member "The devil is in the details." I know I need to get on myspace. I just need to plan appropriately.

Thanks
David

The key to using it professionally is to have a clean look to your page. Many of the examples posted are really very bad because in some cases the text is unreadable. You must go for a clean look that doesn't have a background that is so busy that the text gets lost because of contrast problems.

Essentially you use CSS code that you paste into the various boxes when creating your profile and that is what controls the look of the page. Technically you aren't supposed to do anything that will obscure the ads from showing, but many seem to do it and get a way with it.

There are many Myspace "generators" that will generate blocks of CSS code, but most of them are pretty bad.

Rolando has a good example of a clean Myspace page.

Cheers,
rfs

and be VERY selective who you add as "friends". there are a lot of myspace whores out there who are just trying to collect contacts or spam you with their product or service.

For model tests, myspace is great... I have never had ONE model ask for my rates off any modeling site.. They usually say: hi, love your pics, do you TFP? Within the first 3 months on myspace, I got about 5 requests for a price on my work.

I have not gotten any -real- jobs from it, but hey it can't hurt, I also Im somewhat selective on who I add, as I only have 600+ 'friends'.

Best way to market it, is to leave comments on your friends profiles.

And like someone said, keep it simple and clean! =)

I've gotten more work from myspace in one year than all the other 'modeling and photography" sites, combined, ever.

I am not doubting the value of such a site. My question is how much TIME do you put into it? How often do you need to check it, deal with friend requests, etc?

I, personally, check it a couple of times a day when I make "rounds;" more often when I've got something cooking.

LOL! Looks like one of my secrets might be getting out I've been doing this for about a year now. I totally agree, modeling sites suuuuuck lol. Myspace is full of "regular" people and the network feature is great, I get tons of work there! Both from individuals, AND agencies, fashion companies etc.

A couple of tips for you guys...

Like one poster said, be VERY careful who you add as a friend. In all of Dallas I think I have like TWO other Dallas photographers on my list; Greg Daniels (whose integrity is gold, and even if it wasn't we're on completely different levels so we don't even compete for the same business) and Andrew who frequents this board also who is a super cool guy. Other photographers though, I've heard of them "stealing" not only business, but even tfcd models. I was at a model shootout long ago and overheard someone else say that another guy actually stole a model he was about to do a tfcd with... grrr. That was the first time I recall starting to dislike and lose respect for this person. I literally consider my myspace "friend list" to be exactly the same thing in accounting terms as an "asset" that can be turned into income. It really is that! So guard it accordingly.

Another kewl thing about myspace is that when you add someone as a friend, they see your work immediately, they don't have to "click" a web site or download samples etc, becuase one of your samples is right there in your avatar! Very convenient. they see your avatar and (if it's good lol) that spikes their interest and invites them to look at your other work. There are so many terrible photographers out there that people seem shocked to see high quality work as if they didn't even know they had access to such work; I've had people say "Oh I doubt I could afford you" etc etc.

I have also gotten business for renting my studio thru myspace; I have another myspace for the studio here: http://myspace.com/theeuphoriaroom

So yeah myspace is Grrr8!
