I've been trying to break out of my box in my last few shoots, so I focused on working up close and doing more beauty type work.

I had a great model and makeup artist who made whatever I did easy, they were amazing so all credit goes to them and blame to me.
Model: Raven Von Soren
MUA: Julie Cassotta

good bad other let me hear it.

I like the second and third shots - especially the second. I think the lighting in the first is too directional, her eyes aren't "filled" enough, and her left temple/hair area is blocked up.
The idea in the third is really nice - but the two different strands make it a bit "busy" for my tastes. But it is nicely done. Lovely eyes - but you might want to touch up her left cornea, on the nose side.
Thanks for sharing.

Nice work done by All, Gary,...the first one is a touch hot in the hair and temple area,..but a slight levels adjustment would help, I think.
I'm itching to try some beauty shots myself,..just have to find a model.
Thanks for sharing and post more.

Thanks guys, and the first one I realized after I posted and relooked at needed a bit of help. I edited it for the model in front of her and did it too quick and too much and for sure it is blown out.

Good call John on the second one I should have caught the eye, she had contacts and I knew to fix them but just missed it.

Personally I think the lighting on all of these is pretty bad. That's just my opinion; there are some blown out highlights, the pupils in the last shots are huge (always something to pay attention to on a headshot), the second one looks a bit unsaturated, and the key light in the last one is too low (evidenced by the shadow along the nose; generally that's considered to be a flaw, there's no loop, no butterfly, just a big long shadow along the bridge).

I'm also not sure what about these shots makes them "out of the box"; they seem pretty common to me. Some hats and a veil - ?

Of them, #2 is my fav. I do like the angle and the model's expression. I also like the lines of the earpieces.

As I stated I admit to blown out in first photo, my error in processing, the others I'm not seeing blown highlights at least on my monitor, the tones are light but there.

2nd photo is desaturated on purpose, I tend to like to desaturate my images by about 40% in general, I had these at original saturation but decided they were too bright for what I intended.

And I guess I should have corrected my semantics, not out of the worlds boxy but out of my personal box, I tend to be a photographer who focuses on full body and 3/4 images, to do a series of highly styled beauty shots is outside my box.

And finally thank you for letting me see an example of "polite c&c" I would never have considered "pretty bad" as fitting that description.

THat was only because you did this first:

"This seems to be a rallying cry for you" and proceeded to be pretty rude yourself and throw the first stone, so I felt ok to critique your photos in the same light. I also always try and say what I DO like about a photo, as I did with yours, and not just "pound" on someone. Most would agree that, in just about any photo, there's good and bad.

Now taht we're even, let's start over and discuss our images and hopefully learn from them. I'm always looking to push myself harder and harder.

I'm glad you agree about the highlights etc. and most of the other points I made. I'm not sure why you like to desaturate photos. Can you discuss that a bit? Thanks.

I tend towards a more fashion oriented style, in studying the work of the bulk of fashion shooters who are currently published in W, Vogue, Zink, Flaunt, Oyster and others I see that lower saturation is the current trend. I feel the mood I am trying to achive is best delivered with a desaturated image.
