I'm strugling to figure out a nice background for a bike shoot. I need somekind of backdrop because I will be shooting in a parking lot and the surroundings aren't very pretty. (old strip mall, old burger joints, crap) No, nice old brick or wood buildings here. Even the building on the lot where I'm shooting is painted this ugly light violet color. Next to it is a Burger King and a AutoZone on the other side.

So, I thought about taking some 4 foot wide silver mylar and make either one large panel or make several 4 foot wide panels and turn them at slightly different angles. I could lean them back at an angle too and reflect the sky or something besides the Burger King. I could have them strechted tight or let them ripple, flop about, or hang like seamless paper would.

What do you think?

I believe the silver mylar would be a nightmare! Unless you had lots of help and were able to work on a day with no wind. You would have to stretch it and have a fairly rigid frame built to keep it in place... lot's of work. You may want to check Home Depot or a paint supply store and pick up several large muslin dropcloths, might be a much easier option. You can dye or paint those whatever color you want.

Good luck!

I shot a buddy's Harley a few years ago and it wouldn't fit through the studio doors. I took two painters drop cloths and dyed them in the washing machine.

We hung them off my building, took a few lights out and used them for fill.

It worked out OK.

2 solutions:

1. Shoot in a more appealing setting;

2. I agree w/ the colleagues who recommended a simple muslim backdrop. Especially if you dye a painter's drop cloth yourself, so it's cheap and you don't mind walking around on the muslim.

The real issue outdoors, though, is controlling the light and possibly the weather.

As I mentioned once before in response to your earlier post about this subject, you could always get a ladder and shoot down onto the scene and thus the concrete of the parking lot would be the background. If you wanted to use a backdrop or something on the ground under the bikes, that could work also and would be easier to control, since it would be on the ground.
Cheers,
rfs

yeah, I was trying to avoid doing that. I will keep it in mind as an option though.

yeah, it will probably storm like hell, but, if it does, there won't be anyone to take picturs of anyway. I would like to find a better spot, but that isn't going to happen for this deal. I have to do with what I have, and make it work.
