I was doing some work the other day with the Moon Unit and just for giggles I took the diffuser cover off the front of the light modifier. This makes the Moon Unit look more like a big beauty dish and the results were pleasing. Without the diffuser cover the output went up approximately one stop which could be useful when you are going for that "flash against sky" look which is so popular right now.

Anyway, I also noted an interesting catch light in the eyes with the diffuser cloth off the unit. Whether it's cool or just weird I really haven't decided, but it is different.

As Ed Peters noted, the original mounting bracket was (for lack of a better word) grim. The camera wasn't held properly in place, and you had to pay a lot of attention to the viewfinder to make sure the lens was pointed cleanly through the center of the ring flash. The new mounting bracket is really tight and makes positioning the camera and lens a breeze compared to the original design. The trolley that the camera mounts on takes a little getting used to as there is a screw that requires a screw driver to mount to the camera. I put a little knife/screw diver in the Ziploc bag I use to keep the pieces together and that has been a decent work around for me. I do recommend using a little Ziploc bag to hold the screw and trolley in your kit otherwise your going to misplace it eventually.

To answer Richard's question about mounting a camera with the grip attached to the original mounting bracket, the problem was the original mounting post they sent with the ABR800 was too short. AB solved the problem by sending out an extension post, which did work (sort of) but made the camera/light assembly even more difficult to control (if that was possible). Anyway, that is all old news as the new mounting bracket is very stable and infinitely easier adjust for any camera. And, Richard, I set the diopter on my view finder to match my eyesight without glasses (I'm old and little far sighted). For that reason I have to move my glasses out of the way when I'm shooting, normally to the top of my head. I was kind of surprised to realize I sometimes let them slip down my nose to get them out of the way, wouldn't have thought so but the picture clearly shows me doing exactly that. Like I said, I'm old, that I can see at all is a bit of a mystery.

Iva Ivanova (To quote Mel Brooks, "It's good to be King!")

Putting the whole package together is something of a drag, but I'm so pleased with the results I'm getting out of the camera that I rarely shoot anything needing fill without doing it.

Sounds like you got a manufacturer who actually listens and responds and takes care of the customers.

That is very rare these days!

Of course, da Fish is da Man. And the girls do seem to flock poolside to a certain apartment complex/modeling agency in South Beach. I can't quite figure it out.

BTW, I recognize THAT palm tree.

Shot poolside at the home of the Fish, and soon coming to a major mens magazine that starts with a "P":

Thanks for the info. however i have a question that i couldnt find an anwser to. with the lens buried inside the strobe like that how does one zoom or focus. it is hard for me to visualize what would need to be done. do you prezoom or shoot with a prime? must one always use autofocus when using this?? or am i missing something. I am strongly considering purchasing one of theese units and if i constantly need to mount/unmount the device to make a change to my lens then i need to re think this. the lens i shoot most with is a tamron 28-75 2.8 which i belive would be completely inside the unit.

Thanks Eric

John:
You should not be out there without the two things all of us shiny-headed guys need:

1) assistant holding giant parasol over the photographer
2) assistant to mop the shiny head of the photographer

Hey Mark, I'll keep in mind the problem of keeping my personal solar panel protected at all times. :-)

Brew, I don't know how I missed your original question about using a zoom lens with the ABR800, but as you can see from the picture below, the zoom and focus rings are still easily accessible when using the 70-200 f2.8L zoom.

I had a little more problem working the zoom function on my 24-85 f3.5/4.5 zoom but I suspect the 24-70 2.8L zoom would work fine as it is a little longer and the lens extends as you go wide angle. I do shoot a lot with my 85 f1.8 and have had no problems at all with that lens.

Thanks for the ringflash review. When using a ring flash, how do you avoid red eye?

Fish
The 85 f/1.8: Dollar-for-dollar, the best glamour/portrait/beauty prime lens canon makes. (1/3 the price of the 135 f/2 L and about 1/6 the price of the 85 f/1.2 L)
