Technology is changing constantly. LED's are getting to the point of challenging incandescent bulbs, and surveillence cameras with internet interfaces are rapidly becoming ubiquitious. There is an interesting new development in optical technology that could have a significant impact on photography.

Researchers have developed a nearly perfect non-reflecting surface. This probably will show up in photographic equipment inside lenses and cameras some day, but the implications are interesting...

If your car's surface is totally perfectly non-reflective, is your car visible or is it just a black area in space. Obviously laser speed guns might not catch you, but just what would an observer see if the car reflected absolutely no light?

Anybody for a REALLY black studio background?

I've been reading about this subject also. The April 2007 issue of Scientific American which just hit a few days ago has an extensive article on this new area of research. Its called "Plasmonics". They also showed how one could use it to literally create a "invisibility cloak" ala Harry Potter or H G Wells, Invisible Man. Things we would have once thought were impossible are now actually coming about. I can't wait for one of those cloaks.
Cheers,
rfs

Invisibility implies that light passes through it, non-reflective would indicate that nothing is returned, and therefor anything on the other side would not be seen, thus "black" absence of light?

But wait, I have to ask, when it comes to black in reference to light, being the absence of light, but when it comes to soild objects, being all colors, where does this fall because it is a solid object that eminates light. But if this was used for a car, does that mean the end of paint jobs? I mean, just load up a new color or design, and you can have a new looking car any time you want. This could get interesting. But, I think I'd rather pay to have the car repainted if I got into a wreck instead of the technicians bill.
