Hello

First time doing this kind of shoot. I normally shoot Landscape and decided to play around with people photography. Please tell me what you think I need to improve on. Please tell me which B&W you like better also.

I am no expert by any means. But the things that stand out to me are these

1. The color photo is just to bland. Need a little color to liven up the shot.
2. Which means I prefer the B/W because you don't have to deal with the bland coloring.
3. Its a nice pose and she is pretty. But the makeup under the eyes or the bags. whatever the darkness is, is just to distracting. Shes got nice eyes.

I agree the color shot is a little bland, a few ps tricks would liven it up. I think the second bw shot is preferable because the skin appears cleaner and smoother albeit even just a little. The bw shot is alot more dramatic as well IMO. Great work!

I'm not great with PS what do you mean more color. Brighten the lipstick, skin, or just the picture overall?

Just to confuse you more, I disagree that the image lacks color or pop and I think you nailed the exposure. I'm pretty sure the makeup was a look you were intentionally going for so only you can say if you achieved it.

What I think needs improvement is the cropping. IMO, this image would look better filling the frame with a lot less negative space. Try some different crops and re-post and I'll bet you get a different reaction.

I have to agree with the above comment about cropping. I think its a great shot..nice skin tone..beautiful eyes..if you have PS you may actually be able to brighten the eyes a bit if you desire. I like the makeup

The arguments over coloring and contrast and cropping are mere cant, and miss the important point. As to the makeup/ styling, that's a matter of taste and intent.

The biggest thing that strikes me is the expression. She looks vaguely unhappy, and that's not an appealing look to me. Or to most people. Or to most people evaluating a portfolio. If the look could have been happy, or sexy, or inviting, or attentive, or at least alive, the photo would be stronger.

See to me the look of unhappy was what I was going for. I'm aware some looks are unappealing to others. But thats life, not everthing is apealing.

Thank you for your comment. But we can't please everyone.

I "think" he is going for more of a dark mood / goth style photo...the background throws that off a bit since it is a fairly warm color. The cropping, like was mentioned above, should help alot.
