I'm starting to shoot for agencies now, and I was curious from other pro's what rights does a photographer typically have or expect to have when shooting for an agency? Is it common to give up all rights when shooting for an agency? And what about putting your logo on your photos? I'm assuming it's not standard to do that, since I don't see guy's logos all over magazine shots. Are you expected to give digital negatives, or just prints and, if so, what size? THanks

Stock agency? Modeling agency? Advertising agency?

FWIW, I've shot Andrew Shue, but not his sister Elizabeth. ;>)

I used to shoot for a modeling school. My Permission Form, which I delivered for each model shot along with the Delivery Memo for each delivery, specified what use the model/school could make of the images. It plainly stated that I retained the copyright to the images.

My use of the images would thereby be limited to the same use as any other shoot to which I had not secured a model release.

If I wanted to put a model's image on my website, I'd offer a trade of a free 8x10 for permission to use the image in my online portfolios since it sort of kindof amounts to "publishing" it. I wouldn't expect a need for a release for your physical book, but if it's good enough for that, you might want to use it online as well.

As to the deliverables, it's whatever they pay for and you price accordingly. You can do a model "package", 3 looks, x dollars, you deliver preview prints or cheap scans with your mark if you like. Quality images, sans mark, are purchased on a per image basis. Again, you determine the rates.

This was my deal. But I was not an employee of the school. I was hired to do the shoots. You may not have the same situation I did.

Regarding deliverables, agencies should tell you what they want. As far as rights, you need to learn the business side of this business. Only under extremely rare (and profitable) circumstances should you give up all your rights. Always work for a fair fee and don't be tempted to work on the cheap the first time. Often there never is a next time. And if there is, well you've already established that you'll work for below-market rates. Work Made For Hire (WMFH) is almost always a bad deal for the photographer. Check out: http://www.photobusinessforum.blogspot.com - it's a great site that talks about the business side of photography. The author also has an excellent book on the subject, which you can find there.
