Just registered with Flickr and uploaded one image to test. I notice that there are NO "preventions" on downloading images. There seems to be when you go to the Account Management Privacy and restrictions tab but even with the strongest settings, right click downloads are easy.

Those of you who are using Flickr - Is there something I'm missing or are you not concerned about theft of your images?

ayup

My images aren't typically the glamour type, I lean more towards fashion. Most people don't steal fashion images because while they are provacative, they aren't so sexual, they are more art.

I also plaster my name across the image in a manner that makes it difficult to crop without destroying the shot.

All in all I'm not very concerned with it. Any time you post an image online it stands a chance of being downloaded. Its just a question of how bad someone wants it. Even in print form, copyrights are blatantly ignored.

I Flickr, in fact I have a group with almost 100 members. If you haven't done so already, why not become a member?

The only thing I use fickr for is getting quick results to long distance models. I set her gallery to "friends only" and then only a select few people have access to the image.

And I never, ever, put up anything better in quality than "web ready"... say 600x400.

jimmyD....you were one of the first guys I looked for and I'm happy to say I'm already a member. Hoping e-osmosis will help me through as many pretty girl interactions as possible.

I know anyone can steal an image if it's online, but some sites make it way tougher than this one (Flickr). Why aren't you supershooters more concerned?

No trick will help.. just do what I do and what most ppl hate.. put a big ol faint stamp right smack in the middle of the pic.. I rather ppl email me and say how I killed the image... than find more clowns claiming my images.

If you set the "Who can download your photos" field in account->privacy & permissions, anyone not allowed to download should get a spaceball.gif image instead of your photo.

Of course that doesn't cover anything but it's basic protection I guess. Anyone who has any basic knowledge could simply pull it out of the browser's cache instead.

actually, even that doesn't protect your pic. all you have to do is right-click the pic and "save as".

Yeah, you're right Dax. Ultimately, the only protection is a stamp accross the image. I try to stay away from that and with as much as there is to choose from, I think the image thieves will have me pretty far down their list.

And that's my question! Why would the really great guys who make a living off of photography put their images someplace where it is SO incredibly easy to steal them?

I look at it like the locks on my house - they're not going to stop a professional thief but they will deter the inexperienced, impulse thief. I don't have to make it easy for them by leaving the doors wide open when I'm gone.

So back to my orinigal question paraphrased - why is Flickr so popular when it's so easy to steal images from it?
