I have a potential client who collects hats. In fact, she has a “hat” bedroom in her house where she keeps her collection. She has approached me about photographing her in some of her favorite ones as a gift for her husband (ny suspicion is that he is pi$$ed at how much she pays for them). The setting will be in her “hat” room and will be more Boudoir than Glamour in style and will focus on the hat as much as her. I have searched for pointers about posing and lighting women in hats, but I’ve found very little (see attached examples). The problem, as I see it, will be lighting her face as well as the hat without turning her into Frankenstein. Any advice?

Doc

Here are a couple of out-takes from a recent shoot that I was experimenting with. I'm not completely happy with these, but they will illustrate the points.

1. I think the main light is rather obvious in this one. 5 foot octadome.

2. And the second point - hats don't need to be worn on heads...

Cheers!

One tip - point a narrow light (a snoot + 10 degree grid is what I used) under the brim of the hat - helps separate the front brim from the rear brim. Especially important on dark coloured hats.

I can't post the image I took of this technique 'cause this ain't the Nude forum...

The key with hats is to make sure that the model's face and eyes don't fall victim to shadows from the hat. That is easy to do. You may not even notice while shooting by just looking at the LCD.

Here are a few examples from my own hat collection:

Re: Photographing women in hats

Model is Kami.

In this shot, I had her lift her head so that the ring light would fill in the eyes and face.

Several more hat photos of Kami in this collage (but also some nudes).

Finally, if you do find you have too much shadow, or maybe not enough detail in the hat (against a black background), you can cheat in PS (if you shoot in RAW). Here is a third example of Kami:

Cheers,

Hi Doc,

I'd just have to echo the words of Catcynic. Get yourself a snooted light to put some fill under the brim of the hat so you don't get a Bela Gulosi scheme going. You could even have her hold a reflector below her face if you do some head shots.

Best wishes and I hope you're able to share some of the shots!

Good day.

I love hats and I love a tight crop. Don't be afraid to cut the hat off. Sometimes the hint of a hat is enough.
