I've been a long time phot hobbyist taking mainly lancscapes and travel shots. I'm looking at ditching the finance degree ( who wants to live in San Diego and work behind a desk) and going back to school witth the idea of opening a small studio. Taking Portrait, glamour, .. pics along with landscape pics.

Can anyone recommend some good basic books on lighting and basic guides to portraits. I've read the garage glamour but the lighting area is aover my head - I don't know about softboxes, grids, etc as I've always used natural light.

Any suggestions on good intro books would be appreciated, and any other suggestions for starting out.

Otherwise thanks for all the other posts in the forum, it great to see real critiques of photos vs. the model mahem types of comments( you're nude..great pic..you might do nude pics wow I could work wonders with you....)

Thnkas in advance for any suggestions.

My advice -- don't ditch the finance degree. If you're successful as a photographer, it will come in handy to manage all your money. If you don't succeed as a photographer, you'll have something to fall back on. And, for what it's worth -- shooting just portrait, glamour and landscapes probably won't pay for a decent San Diego lifestyle.

With regard to a book to help you, I'd suggest contacting other professional photographers in your area and offer to work as an assistant. I've found that hands on training will get you a lot farther than you'll get from reading books.

Best of luck
