You can certainly use a regular head with a soft box or beauty dish or bare bulb much the same way. The ABR has an 80° beam spread that provides even coverage with the widest of lens angles. It's light and easy to lug around compared to let's say a soft box or the beauty dish and a regular head. There will be differences in light quality, light fall off, soft, flat and more or less directional. I am certainly not saying that a ring flash on a stand or on camera is the only way to go but this was easy. It's just a tool that provides a nice quality light output and I was not lugging other things around. AS far as actual comparing, we plan on doing just that on the beaches on South Padre in February.
