So I just put film in my recent ebay win a Minolta SRT-102 for the first time and the film advance lever will not move beyond the "free play" range. Too say I am bummed is an understatement? In my naivety I assumed that the film advance lever only moved when there was film in it. Is this an easy fix or even worth fixing? I just wanted a nice solid beginners camera to get my feet wet and I thought I got it oh well the downside of ebay...
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

I've been there. If you send it to get fixed it'll cost you a couple hundred bucks. The problem is a diode right at the bottom of the camera. The last time this happened to me I took it over to my local TV repair place. Showed them which one to change. $5 was all it cost. This is a common one problems with Minoltas.

I just had a second thought. Is the battery OK? Does the meter work? That might be it.

I've found these guys to be great when I'm working on my antique cameras. Give them a shout.

Sounds like a tough break, but it happens . . .

I'm in Southern California, and I know of a shop here in the Los Angeles area that's dirt cheap and provides excellent service, drawbacks are she's way out here and only works on film equipment, so all you digital folks are outta luck cuz she won't touch digital . . . If you'd like contact info, let me know via PM and I can forward you her contact info to see if she can help you.

The SRT-102 doesn't depend on a diode for film advance, nor a battery. It's a mechanical film wind, and it's broke. If this is the first time you used it, it was broke when you bought it. I'd complain to the person who sold it to you and take any available actions through ebay.

Here's another possibility. In film cameras, the film advance lever often doesn't move unless the shutter has been activated. In other words, it won't wind twice between shots. Have you tried pushing the shutter button and then using the lever?

I would go to a camera shop in your area and ask them what's wrong. They'll be able to advise whether the camera is truly broken, or you are just doing something wrong. Assuming it is broken, and assuming the eBay seller represented it as working, you can contact eBay and they will intervene on your behalf. If you paid through Paypal, then you also have options with them. If you used a credit card to fund the purchase, then you can also revoke acceptance with the credit card company. You need to be sure, if it is indeed broken, that you don't let the eBay seller get away with it. You must take all actions needed to get what you paid for. By the way, what exactly did the eBay seller represent in his or her auction description?
Cheers,
rfs

I agree with FR Smith...don't accept it...fight for your money back and get something else.....www.keh.com always competes with ebay prices and has a warranty on all of their used goods....
