With all of the memory hogging programs we use as shooters I am wondering if Vista is necessary. I know that yo can't allow yourself to fall behind. Is this one of those times when upgrading is necessary?

I am sure I will upgrade though probably not immediately. I will let a few bugs get worked out.

I'll wait for a while and let the bugs get worked out as well. It'll also give me a chance to see what others think of it first.

Long time no see. How've ya been?

Check out the move vista to a new system (also happens with significant PC upgrades) restrictions. I'll hang with XP as long as I can.

I'll be getting a copy with a new computer that I'll be buying shortly after the first of the year. I always have to have the latest OS for program testing, etc.
Cheers,

With Apple now on the Intel platform and having the ability to run XP (if you have to use a Windows application), I've started testing a mid-level iMac to see what the drawbacks are. So far it's going smoothly with only a Directx issue that I think I'll soon have resolved. It used to be too much investment to buy all new Mac apps but many times you can get an upgrade price from the vendors for switching platforms. Compared with the hardware upgrade costs for a lot of folks in running Vista, I'll bet there is quite a number that will switch.

Cheers,
LSC

If it was up to me, I'd still be using Windows 98!

I wouldn't recommend Vista right now (still a Release Candidate). We've got a couple machines here running it for testing in applications and it has a pretty steep learning curve.

Graphically it's pleasing, but I'm sure you'll give up some performance when you move to it. We'll be on XP for a while, till the 64 bit support gets a LOT better...

I have plenty of experience working with pre-release Windows, and release candidates (going back a looooong way - I beta-tested Windows 3.0, and NT 3.1, amongst other things) - if you are not a software developer, you should probably avoid the first release of a new OS. Ideally, hold off until the first service pack hits. Sure, you won't have the new shiny play-pretty, but you won't have the incompatibilities, the crashes, and the lost work, either. (BTW: the same applies to a new release of Mac OS, too)

XP works fine, and will be supported for a long time yet. Hang onto what works for a while, and save yourself some pain. There's plenty of pain around that we can't avoid

I'm running it on my Mac Book Pro. I have a bunch of Microsoft only machine and a bunch of Apple. I like Vista but that because the more MS can make Windows look like OS X the better. Aero, the GUI, will most likely need a faster graphics card and more memory always helps. Vista isnt going to help you Photoshop wise so unless like me your a gadget nut I wouldnt bother until you buy a new machine.

Catcynic,

I've never been an early adopter so I'm with you and waiting this one out. But when/if the time comes I'll install it on a brand new PC.

Doc,

I miss Win-98 too and it really screams on my current fast proc/high RAM PC. Too bad program support is rapidly fading. I only upgraded due to the FAT-32 4GB file limitation. I do some video work and I need large file support (ala NTFS).
