We have all seen or shot them, the subject on a solid seamless background with no shadow under or behind them.

“Floaters “are what I call them it looks like they are floating in mid air. I prefer to have shadows under or behind my subjects IMO it makes the photo seem real not surreal.
Unless surreal is what you are going for of course.

What is your preference and why?

I'm with you Ron, shadows are real world. Everybody hammers me for shadows. I don't have a big enough studio to make it Mr. Clean looking and I like shooting out doors, so if they are natural looking I'm ok with them.

Real World!

Sweet looking kid is it yours?

Actually the rule doesn't quite read that way. Here is what Rule 6 says:

However, any G1 "family or community" member may post an image of their immediate family or friends, including their kids that are minors, when it comes to portraits, family pics, birthdays, holidays, etc., when it's obvious the G1 family member from this first-class community is posting their "immediate family and friends pictures."

I think the picture at the start of this thread would fall under the above rule.

Cheers,
rfs

When I read a post like this I ask myself what is he trying to achieve? Another drive by pot shot? Or is there really something we can learn from him?
Ron was seeking an opinion I don't think you gave him one, or any information he could use.
You surely could benifit from people like Mr. Smith. He is always on the ball, and his point is usually correct!

My preference is to see subtle shadows with an image like this as long as
they are properly placed. It does add to the realism that there is something
there that the person is standing on.

Somehow, 'a customer's daughter" seems to be stretching the boundaries a bit much, especially since there is no corresponding 'event' such as a birthday, holiday, etc.

You can find some kind of connection to almost anyone. Six degrees of Kevin Bacon, and all that...

I just try to understand the forum rules, and hope they are applied equitably. But based on this situation being acceptable, I really fail to see how there are any limits now.
