Hello all.

First Iíd like to say that this is a great site, beautiful women, great photos and lots of tips. Iím looking for a little help. Like many photographers starting out I shoot a lot of weddings, landscapes and family and pet portraits (got to start somewhere) but a friend has asked me to shoot graduation (Cap and gown) photos. I have shot them before but have never been happy with them mostly because the photos are your everyday grad photos. Iím looking for some suggestions or inspiration for different grad photos.

Thanks

p.s this is my first post.

I've never taken Grad pics but I would think trying to capture the essence of the moment would be a good place to start. I would want a pic of the different emotions: the joy and pride of their accomplishment, the sorrow of leaving comfort and freinds, the fear of the coming unknown. . . I think my best work comes when I let my subject be themselves. They get used to the camera after the seventh reload.

Whenever I have no idea how to shoot a shot, I look at magazines on the subject and then I take a thousand pics

Thanks for the advice. Finding grad photos is easy, finding different kinds not so easy. So Iíve started looking at teen type magazines and just ad the Cap and gown to the pose I think what I should end up with may work. If Iím happy with them Iíll post.

Thanks again.

Cap and Gown portraits are just that. Cap and Gown. They are pretty standard formal portraits. Be careful not to create cheesie portraits while trying to be creative. Dramatic lighting can help more than a pose. Always shoot for your client first for what they came for you for then expand on any creative ideas you have.

Thanks. Chessie is the last thing i want. I've shot Cap and Gown before but this client has asked for different. I'll try working with Dramatic lighting and shoot til the cards full.
