Howdy, I shot these last week. Any comments would be appreciated. Particularly your thoughts on the B/W conversions.

Thanks, David

Nice images - I especially like the second shot. B&W conversion looks fine, what method did you use?

Nice images! I do like the b&w conversion. It almost looks sepia-toned.

Question: in the extreme closeups, how are you achieving the blurred background? Was it done with an open aperture or in post-processing? If done with open aperture, were u shooting with studio lights or ambient only?

Thanks for your comments, guys. These were shot with a large softbox with a reflector for fill at F4 with a Canon 5D. There was no additional softening of the background. If you are using a reduced frame camera like a 20D or any of the Nikons you would get about the same effect at F2.8.

The B/W conversion was done using the Channel Mixer to get the skin tonality I was looking for and then I pushed the contrast quite a bit. The final step is a slight warming using Color Balance. I like this much better for portaits than a purely neutral tonality.

Try this trick for adjusting contrast. Make a duplicate layer and change the blend mode to "overlay". Pull the opacity all the way down to zero and gradually move it up until you get the effect that suits you. If you want to soften the skin some you can add gaussian blur to this layer. Season to taste. As a final tonality tweak you can use the midtone slider in levels to brighten the overall effect. After you flatten the image use the unsharp filter to put in the final punch by using settings that are a little different than normal. These images used 20% at 25 radius with a threshold of 3. This is the process I used on both the color and B/W versions.

thanks, David
