Hey All,

I am ordering the 580 ex for canon in the am from BH. I would love to hear any feedback from anyone who owns one. Goods and the bads. Any cool things any negative things. If anyone has any images shot with it..please post if you could.

Thanks for the help,
Michael

The only thing bad I can say about it is the learning curve.

Hey Michael:
This is an awesome flash with an awesome GN, super with other speedlights with Master/slave technology. The only downside besides price is it's consistant EV performance is not all that fantastic on anything other than the 1 series digitals. If it's on 20D (my experience), 30D or lessor, it is not a very consistant performer here. The only one I would trade it out for however is maybe a Metz54. But since I already have the 580, I would get another one for the master/slave capabilities.

Yep...the biggest issue is the learning curve. It may be harder to figure out than the camera itself. I don't use mine much, and when I do I use manual primarily and adjust the power for the amount of fill I need. Seems to work OK for me, but I am not a vet of on camera flash by any means. Here are a few taken a few weeks back using the 580 for fill and to balance the bg...

Hey all,

Thanks for all the replies. I have heard from other people that this flash truely works best only in manual mode. Since I am no expert of fill light, I have thought about saving my pennies for an 800-1600 AB with the vagabon battery. Might be a bear to lug around but I think I will get better results. Especially since I am after about a two stop diff between the model and the background. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Michael
