I know we're just kinda joking around here but, at the risk of sounding argumentative--which is not my intent--it's my opinion that there is no best way. There is, as you point out, good and better or maybe right and wrong, and certainly there's not good, but i don't think there's a best, nor do I think there's worse (cuz everytime I see an image that I thought couldn't be shot worse someone comes along and beats it out for the worst.) It's an interesting point to think about. I'm thinking I could shoot a model and light her a number of different ways and each would be good or better or worse, but to choose the best or perhaps to think that there an even best-ier way is certainly probable. i'm not saying this to take anything away from this excellent image of Kelly but, well, you get what I'm saying, right?
