I am going to have a small photographer get together and in the promotional materials I want to use pictures of the models. I have never shoot with some of the models and they say I can use pictures from there portfolios. I'm not sure. What do you guys think?

Unless they actually took the photos themselves, which I doubt, or have bought unlimited use rights you might be on thin ice. Have them get a release form each photographer. Or better yet, get them together for a private shoot and use your onw photos.

Strictly speaking, you'd be violating the copyright owner's copyright, if you don't have a license from the copyright holder for the contemplated use.

BTW, the copyright owner provides a LICENSE. Not a "release."

It's unlikely a photographer would throw a hissy fit over such use as you mention. But not impossible.

Just a bit of a naive question, but lets say the models original release was one that allowed her/him to use the photos for self promotion, would that possibly cover this use?

A definite "maybe." If the license (NOT 'release') allowed model self-promotion use, it probably wouldn't cover YOUR use in promoting YOUR get-together.
