Super 8 kinda went the way of the Dodo bird with the advent of hand held video gear.

Who'd want to pay the price of film and processing, then fool with splicing, and carrying around a projector and screen when the handi-cam VCR can do it all cheaper and more conveniently?

The market for super 8 stuff just disappeared when video got portable, you can buy the cameras/projectors/screens in the thrift stores for a buck or two...

I haven't seen any super 8 film or cameras advertised in a while, but I must admit I haven't been looking for them...

I had an 8mm movie camera. Last time I used it was 1979.

Let's see, that was in high school back in the late 70's. It was when the original star wars movie came out. We borrowed the schools 8mm cameras, lighting, makeup, and special effects gear...(tape and some metal tubing to make explosions with while using a big balloon full of propane)...We built a mock-up of a battlestar gallactica viper cockpit with a large backdrop of a hanger. In places we used stop frame animation for the animated ship shots by using a scaled down viper model. Oh yeah, and we made it a silent movie including the little monologue cards with the swirly borders and added a cheesy piano sound track like the old silents had. The aliens were a friend of mine with a cotton ski mask pulled down and tucked into his collar with the hat stuffed into his mouth...

It was called Star Blitz...hehe

And I thought I was the only 8mm film geek out there. In the early 70's my high school buddy and I used to set up two 8mm cameras and shoot stop-motion clay figures doing battle with dragons in a King Arthur setting. Ten years later, that same buddy and I started a video production company in Dallas ... but everything we shot was on 3/4" video. We stayed in the video business almost a decade and watched technology advance from 3/4" to Betacam Sp to digital ... and now HD. But with all the new technology, it's still fun to look at some of my old stop-motion movies (transfered to DVD of course)

...not since late 1980 in high school. We had to make a film for drama class. I have it in MPEG format now.

Obviously, not too many here watch music videos. Not too many years ago, music videos brought back Super-8 because of its unique look. And they did so by integrating Super-8 with larger film formats and video. I've also seen this small format integrated into feature films. I've shot Super-8 and I've done so as recently as a few years ago. I still have a Bolex Super-8 camera... not synch-sound unfortunately. There are a number of film-to-tape conversion facilities in the L.A. area and it ain't cheap doing those Super-8 telecines, especially when you add Da Vinci and Flame and other gear into the mix for effects. Some of you guys are awfully quick to speak of things you know little about. Super-8 can be really cool and add a whole other dimension to film and video projects.
