While shooting with Mia, a Houston based model, I noticed my back light through the view finder while composing a shot. It was diffused by the sheers I was using, but looked interesting. I went ahead and captured the photo with and without the light in the image, knowing I could clone it out if I didn't like it. Knowing that the eye leads to the brightest part of the image, my question is does it work, or is it such a distraction that it takes away from the shot??...I kind of like it, as it is something a bit out of the norm. Just looking for some opinions and different POV's...

I'd be willing to bet those same (IMHO) morons who think that if a model's arm is behind her it must have been amputated or if a there are powerlines or tree limbs behind a woman's head they must be growing out of it will tell you it's a distraction.

Personally, I scanned the images and didn't even notice it until I went back and read your post (I like to see the images first so nothing biases me). My eye went to the attractive woman.

So no I don't find it distracting, but I like the image without it better.

If you like the image without it better then surely it was a distraction. You probably looked at it first from a Man's perspective.

Opinions? Well, I guess you came to the right place! Here's mine: #1 doesn't work for exactly the reasons you mentioned. There's stuff that's out of the norm that works and stuff that doesn't. Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't. I'd go with #2

it isn't that morons, like myself, actually believe a model's arm is amputated or that power lines grow out of her head in images like those you've referred to, it's that morons, like myself and some others, believe many models' images are improved when photographers learn to notice these details, thusly displaying a more discerning and critical eye, when shooting them. But what do I know? Morons like myself aren't usually photo editors.

BTW, if you like the image better without the mysterious, round, blown-out and, IMO, distracting highlight in the drapes, why's that? I mean, pixel-for-pixel, both images are identical other than the aforementioned highlight.

No disrespect BobbyG, but, are these seriously two different images?

The reason I ask is that it looks like there has been some cloning done to remove the light on the second one. I mean everything right down to her position, pose, expression, finger and hand positions are identical.

Where did he claim they were two "different" images? He also stated he cloned. Confused of your reply.

Uh.. that's the point - the two images ARE identical except for the light.

Now, tell Bobby which one you prefer, Coz

Bobby,

I guess I'm in good company of the other morons who think the light is distracting.

I tried something similar last year... only with one light, it didn't look quite right. We put three (or four, can't remember - I'm on the road this and next week down in Corpus and don't have the images uploaded to my webserver, so I can't find the one I'm thinking of) and it looked a bit less 'accidental' - we gel'ed a couple of 'em, and the image came out looking pretty good, IMHO.
