For the second time this year I found out that a model I recently worked with has died. I don't know the details other than a car accident.
This is not a post about grief and how sad it is that his life was cut short, etc. This is more just a post about how it seems that the number of models that die young is so skewed. I know of quite a few that I have come personally in contact with I look back at the people that I grew up with, went to school with, lived in my neighborhood that have died and the numbers are so radically skewed. It isn't like we are talking about rock stars living with fame and adoration (well, maybe adoration). I know that the death of young people is not at all limited to this business. There are a lot of sad stories, but it just seems like things are starngely out of balance.
What the heck is with this business? This is more a curiosity than anything I guess. There no real answers, but there has to be some correlation I would think.

Rick, I don't know if I can speak intelligently about this or not, but I might have some perspective. First, a long time ago when I was young, there were kids that got killed. Some drowned at the quarry, jumping in the water from too high, some were killed by farm tractors, or (like nearly got me) a bicycle accident. Those were the accidents. Then there were the "Tragic Accidents." Those were the rich kids with so bright a future, with so much to live for, the ones that got the publicity. My own cousin drove his Corvette into a white oak tree that did not budge one inch. Took his girlfriend with him.

I think in this business, so many of us are "self absorbed." That is a hard thing for a youngster. All that attention, all the money, all the adoration. Look at the Hollywood brats. I think there is a normal number that goes with young adult deaths. I do think it is skewed in the modelling profession because more and more of the kids feel "larger than life", and God knows, we pump them up.

The other thing is we hear about it. We are a tight knit community, many of us worked with or shared the same models. Look at the ports. Some of us share models or we have networked with them. I guess I was right in the beginning. I don't know enough. I know in my carreer, I saw way too man dead kids. Your mind just can't get around kids and dying. It is not the natural order of things. I hadn't thought about this for four years now, and it is no better now. Kids need to be kids, and that is not a capital crime. More medication is on the way......
