Dear Mr. Gray,

My name is XXX and I am the VP and Director of Model Recruitment & Development for XXXX Modeling Agency and I am responsible for the development and promotion of "new faces", which is what our agency specializes in. We find them jobs on a non-exclusive, non-commissioned basis to mainly get them experience and exposure before they hit the majors.

We take girls with little to no experience that we feel may have a chance finding work and find them various assignments and shoots. As we both know, breaking out strong in the industry may be quite difficult for a young 19 year old, especially when it comes to building up their portfolio and all of the other expenses it takes to have a professional image.

Would you be willing to do a TFP with a model/artist in the Charleston area? I love your style. Do you think that is something we can get done? Nothing huge, just a few shots on CD, etc. to get her portfolio and online marketing package up and running.

I would love to discuss the possibilities of us working to help out each other. The power of word of mouth is priceless! Please contact me at XXX or by email at your earliest convenience.

Thanks for your time and consideration and I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,
XXXX
Vice President & Director of Model R&D

What do you want to bet that he isn't as generous with his time as he want's you to be with yours? I'm guessing a photo shoot is included with whatever he is charging the model. I got a similar e-mail a while back. I don't recall who it was from but it sounded about the same. I just trashed it. I do TFP, but not for scammers.

My Motto -- "I don't shoot free ... if it don't benefit ME!"

I too have received similar emails from "Model Management" companies. One even asked if I would offer them a "volume deal" --- they would "exclusively" send all their new models to me if I would offer them all TFP/CD shots. WTF? I guess if you're a new photographer (or GWC) this would be a great way to shoot with a lot of different models and build your portfolio. But if you don't already have a good portfolio ... they're probably not going to ask you to shoot for them.

A few months back I had a model who wanted me to give publication rights to some alt-porn site (not SG but similar) for free. I explained that I don't give free rights to commercial sites. If you're makin' money, I'm makin' money.

She was very upset and had the site contact me. They offered to make me the "Official Chicago Photographer" for the site. (How desperate are THEY, huh?) I asked what this involved and basically it was the opportunity to shoot all interested models in this area.

For free.

I explained patiently that if I wasn't going to shoot *one* model for free, it didn't really sweeten the pot any to offer me the opportunity to shoot a *lot* of models for free. I have all the models I want or need. They are starting to offer *me* money to shoot *them.*

I don't know why she was so indignant about me declining. Perhaps she's used to dealing with GWC who would view the opportunity to view alt chicks naked for free as a valuable opportunity in and of itself. All I know is I've had this conversation with more than one model who wants her pictures placed on a commercial site, for free, to get "exposure."

Homey don't play dat.

I want exposure, I buy an ad. (In fact, I just did. See Gothic Beauty Issue #21, street 8/25.) I don't let *other* people make money with *my* work. That's not exposure, that's just a gift. Do something nice for me, I'll give you a present. The opportunity to shoot wannabe models and spend hours retouching the images so you can sell access to them is not "something nice."

Sorry. Ranting.
