This time I took on the subject of retro-glamour. If any of you are wondering why I'm investing time updating this blog almost daily (for now), well, just know there is some method to my madness... probly not much, but some.

Thanks to some of you here and others elsewhere, I'm already averaging about 200 unique visitors a day and I've only been doing this a few days! Thanks!

I, for one, would like to hear (and see) more about Hollywood style glamour. I've seen a few pictures of Hurrell working in his studio, so I have a faint idea of the tools that he had to work with. it is interesting to note that Hurrell wanted to put one of the lights on a boom so that he could position it more easily.

i do the same thing. i have a mole-richardson "comet" boom. (i'm sure hurrell had the same boom.... well, not the exact same one but you get what i'm saying.) when using hotlights, i usually hang a mole "baby" 1k from it. i also have a mole "baby" that i gutted and rigged so it will hold a monolight. i hang that from the comet boom as well. makes life easier when you can boom the light in. wish i had another one like it.

I love the work you're doing with the retro Hurrell look. Very nice.
By the way, I think his boom light was the Bardwell-McAllister boomlight.
I'm in the process of building my own Fresnel lights (I recently bought a box of surplus 9" fresnels that in round metal frames that apparently were used on some sort of lights. I'm going to mount them on nested/sliding cardboard tubes (the kinds that are used for concrete forms and that way it will be focus-able and can be used with hot or strobe lights.

Cheers,
rfs

OMG Jimmy, whay enjoyable reading. So different from your daily posts here. Your effort to put some of your knowledge into the blog is admirable to say the least. To top it off, the B&W of Laurie (the one where she's looking up in the 10 o'clock position) is outstanding. I've been wanting to shoot a bit of old-Hollywood glamour and you've helped in the inspiration department. Kudos to you.

My source is "Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits" by Mark A Vieira, 1997. On page 50 is talks about Hurrell's wanting a light like a Mole-Richardson, but on a boom. He was told there wasn't one. He persisted and they found one for him and they show a photo of it on plate 61, page 53 and identify it as a Bardwell-McAllister. And you're right, they all look similar.

Cheers,
rfs
